I can't edit "fallout.cfg"

El Scorcho

First time out of the vault
Hello, new member here. I'm hopeless with computers so if the solution to this issue is extremely obvious, and I misread the stickied thread, then I apologize.

I've run into the "Couldn't locate/load text fonts" error. I've copied the fixed code from the troubleshooting thread into the fallout.cfg folder. When I tried to save it, it asked if I wanted to replace the old fallout.cfg file, and I said yes. It said it could not create the file, and to "make sure the path and file name are correct".

The rejected path is: C:\Program Files\Blackisle\Fallout2\fallout2.cfg

I searched all over for a solution but never came across this particular problem. It would be much appreciated if someone were to point me in the right direction on this. I just finished Fallout 1, and enjoyed it immensely. Not being able to play F2 is killing me.

Also, if it helps, I have Killap's restoration mod installed. My operating system is Windows Vista.

I had this problem on Vista as well, while messing with another game (Morrowind, I think).

What worked for me:

1. open .cfg
2. modify
3. safe to another location (My Files etc.)
4. copy into respective game folder
5. click replace

Thanks for the quick reply. That seemed to work. Unfortunately, not it says "Could not find the master datafile". That problem isn't in the Troubleshooting thread. Anyone know how to fix this?

If you have Vista don't install F2 in the program files folder. That's just asking for problems

Try somewhere else like C:\Fallout2

That should fix your problems.

Alternatively you can just disable UAC in Vista if you know how to do it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks man! I created a folder called "Games" and it worked. Hopefully installing the restoration project won't sabotage it...

No problem

I don't think you'll have any more troblues.

It's basically the way that Vista treats stuff in the program files folder that causes the problems.

Now go and enjoy this great game made even better by Killap's RP. :D

In Vista or Win7, look in your user folder, under App Data/Local/Something/Something or something.
