Indexing FRMs

First time out of the vault
I am at the stage of analysing the Art in Fallout2.
Specificaly the Critters animations in Critters.dat
To fully understand these animations I decided to index them.
I started with HANPWR series of FRMs which correspond to the Adv. Power Armor Anims. I now fully understand the extensions however, for fun I wanted to compare them to other character anims. So I went on to the HAPOWR (Power Armor) series of FRMs. It is here that I noticed something a bit odd about the death animations, and the death anims for other older FRMs such as leather, vault suit, etc. Here it is, the death anims carry the file extension .FR0, .FR1, & so on. That of which FRMworkshop does not recognize.
On a hunch, I renamed one .FRM so I could open it in FRMworkshop.
Voila, the animations are displayed correctly. What I dont understand is how the game uses the .FR# extensions when FRMs are already the standard. Could someone explain why this is?

What I dont understand is how the game uses the .FR# extensions when FRMs are already the standard. Could someone explain why this is?
I can't explain WHY this is(probably because it's more orderly to read it that way), but I can say that extensions never ever matter for a file. You an give it whatever extension you want, you could name it .exe, and it still wouldn't matter to any program, UNLESS the program has a check built into it saying "If the extension is different, don't even try to open it." If that check isn't in there, extensions won't ever matter.

IN short, there's no reason why you shouldn't do it. The reason why they did was probably to be able to distinguish more easily between files.

the HA stands for Hero Androgenous ( sp? means neither male or female.. )

which is Hero Female

obviously Hero Male
 
I did not know that, I relsied that the last two letters were the armour and weapon type, didnt click onto the first two though

As far as the different extensions are concerned I was just looking at that last night. It only seems to have them for the different death sequences for dying by defrent methods ie: plasma gun, minigun, critical hits etc...

The interesting thing I noticed, and correct me if Im wrong I have not verifed this yet, is that instead of the 6 different directions (east facing, west facing etc...) being in the one frm they are in 6 separet ones. Labled *.fr0 = north east, *.fr1 = east, *.fr2 = south east, *.fr3 = south west, *.fr4 = west, *.fr5 = north west. I have not proved this yet though, I will check it out soon. But my suspision is that there must be a problemin the engine that requires this, so any new FRMs would need to be set up the same way.

Im about to rename my new criters to the correct naming convention so if you have a list worked out could you please post it somewhere or upload as TXT file.

Thanks for clearing that up ColJack, It was also bugging me that that I Could'nt figure out what HA was... Androgenous figures for power armor. My index will now reflect that.

I checked it out, this has me puzzled aswell, the different orientations mean nothing to the .FR# as they are all the same and separated. I have no clue why it is like this when they could have put the orientations all in one FRM?? Im sure it wont matter in the end, since I wont be editing those, but I still desire to understand.
 
Like I say, once you've finished your index send me a copy :) or we can do a bit each and compile it together. I need this as the final step in making my critters.
 
For sure. I redid it last night, and Its almost finished, should be done within an hour or so. But that might vary, I just got home from work and am starving... I just have to finish up the Death animations. Would you prefer that I send it through e-mail? Eitherway I was planning on posting it here.

My guess is NPC.

Also with some thought towards the FRM - FR# files...
My guess is the game looks for a filename then sequences it depending on the orientation which a single FRM contains.
But if the game does not find a single FRM, it will sequence the proper FR# according to orientation. This is only in death animations and excludes the flaming Animations as they are in .FRM (Only 3).

Last thing check out "NMLOSRBJ" in FRMworkshop, I dont remember seeing this one in game.
I believe their are a couple more unused FRMs such as "HFCMBTBC". Also the "MADETH" series of FRMs is a really cool grey Deathclaw. Might have been an older version of Goris. Anyways im thru for a little while.
 
MADETH was the mother deathclaw in the ruins on the way to the gun runners in fallout 1..
 
I never noticed that, I remember it being so dark beneath the building, I figured it was as orange as the others.

On a side note, I forgot this :
FRMs with the suffix "na" are for the Image you get when you do a Targeted shot .

What are the specs required for a new targeted shot pic ?

Same size only, right ?
 
The same size and colour palette. The best way is to edit an existing one, also please note that it is best that you try and keep the green lines where they go off the edge of the image in the same place, that way they will line up with the target boxes
 
I know this is kind of grave digging, but with all the new critters being made recently this list of usefull for the moddlers to take a look at.
Siren, we should be able to check through the attack types on the list above to get your critter working :)
 
This thread has been really helpful, but does anyone know of one that has a similar list for the stuff in the master file? I'm looking to get images of the inventory items and such.
