Just another example of modders wasting their time on companies and fans that don't deserve it.

I dont understand why companies bother with this shit. It doesnt help them sell more games and literally only makes them look bad.

He's probably doing something similar to what I used to do for my friends when I was a kid.

When I got my PSX (original Playstation 1), I also got a thing called "Xplorer" (I think it's named Xploder in some countries). This was a piece of hardware somewhat similar to a Gameshark.

So I then would use that to allow me to save anywhere on Final Fantasy 7 (because it only allows to save on the world map or save points). Once my friends found out I could use the Xplorer to cheat on FF7, they started asking me to use it to give them all the Ultimate Weapons, rare equipment and items and unique Materia.
So they would give me the memory cards with their game saved in them, I would use the Xplorer to add those things to their saves and then I would give the memory cards back with all those things added to their games.

What this guy seems to have been doing was something similar, but more than just add a few cheats or items. I think that article mentioned that he was also adding abilities that the game doesn't allow Link to have or something like that.

Basically what he was doing was making what's similar to save game mods. While normal mods allow you to use external files made by modders to change your game, he was doing the same but by altering save game data.

You do have to own the game, you have to play the game and get a save file and then share it with that guy, he would then "mod" that save file by adding all the stuff the client wanted and then send the "modded" save file back to the original owner.

He was not altering the games, he was only altering the save file's data.

It's basically just like someone using the F12SE to edit FO1 or FO2 save files.
Over the years, there's been a huge amount of save file editors for innumerable games.

This guy probably managed to make his own Save File Editor for BotW (which he probably had to code himself) and was just getting some money out of it's own work. He didn't open up any consoles, he didn't altered any hardware or even the game, he only altered "save file data". Using software he (presumably) coded himself.

Yeah but @Risewild innovation and custom modification is BAD. Unless you’re a mindless corporate shill who hates fan service and indirect promotion of a product, you’re a pirate and an anarchist!!

@Eshanas I’ve never given out a downvote here. Ever. But if WTFITFAS was an emote outside the Order, I’d have given you as many as possible, simply as my only way of voicing my displeasure with the insanely idiotic statements you’re making and shilling going on here. We are all now fucking dumber having read your posts.

PS, I am an anarchist. I take pride in you calling basic respect for a fanbase “anarchy”.

If this is what is going on then I can't imagine what law how could have possible broken. Then again, Japan has like a 96%+ conviction rate?

Dunno how his case works, but I know that a lot of piracy cases begin with a DMCA notice telling the private citizen to remove their software from social media or get rid of their own software. From there, the company can decide what it wants to do, and sue the private party on a John Doe basis.

Nintendo is notorious for suing, which is hysterical to me. Why?

Because the amount of money Nintendo spends on litigation usually far outweighs the money these private sellers make/the cost of what they “steal”.

Nintendo literally just does it to send a message, but the only message it really sends is that they’re fucking assholes.

Whatever happened to the John Deere case with going after farmers who'd try and repair their tractors for less than a quarter million? I should check up on that again.

The case is still ongoing. It makes sense, a lot of larger legal cases like this can last years.

All of this post was well said. I can only agree that your mod shouldn't be able to be sold if it doesn't require people to already own the game themselves. Mods that require you own a copy of the game should be able to be sold. It's your work and if anything, it encourages people to buy that game to try your work. I don't understand why that's so controversial.

It’s controversial because minsformed fucknuts don’t understand what “stealing digital content” actually entails.

When I was still going to law school we covered DMCA and Bill Clinton’s passing of that bill (haha), and the entire time all I could think was “do the people who support this shit have any inkling of how digital media and its distribution actually works?”

    Nope.

This just in. Old fucks don't get art and electronics. Look at fucking Tipper Gore and the nonsense of trying to interpret lyrics to advise parents of what's being said in the song. There's a reason the ESRB was founded by people in the game industry after Mortal Kombat and company kicked up controversy. If you get whack jobs who don't know jackshit to shut up, the government won't have to censor you.

DMCA is also fucking awful. I am all for supporting creators and protecting their rights but some of this shit just goes way too far. I will say I'm really glad Metallica got DMCA'd on Twitch when they tried to stream a show on there. They advocated for this type of shit.

Also, fuck Disney for ruining public domain. Those hacks started by using public domain and then turned around and protected the hell out of their precious mouse. There's a point where in protecting the creators stops protecting creators and starts protecting giant corporations and infringing upon what art can potentially be.

I sympathize for the independent artist. I have no sympathy for a company that takes an artist's or artistic team's creation for their own. Completely taking that work, legally owning it, and making the most off of it. You won't hear me cry about pirates or modders. I mean fuck, Resident Evil 7 has performance issues that disappear if you break the DRM that it's packed with. Another fine example of protection gone too far. Pirates still get free games and paying customers get a lesser product.

Yeah, boo fucking hoo some guy was modding content of a Nintendo game. I'm sure the CEOs' yachts were howling with starvation in their dock that night. Won't you think of the poor yachts?

Yeah, exactly. It’s like how Ubisoft’s (I think it was Ubi) PR guy awhile back flat out said that DRM doesn’t prevent piracy.

The lawmakers are completely out of touch, and the companies know that and take full advantage of it.

How could DRM stop piracy? It slows it down just a bit and if they're lucky for more than a week. Remember CrackWatch? It was always funny to watch games' statuses become cracked within 24 hours of the files being downloadable. Yeah all that DRM money you spent did a lot for you huh.

There's a Denuvo list on reddit though and it's funny to see the oldest games without cracks are games most people don't really give a fuck to break into anyway. The newer they get, the more relevant the fact it isn't cracked yet is showing DRM slightly working. That is until it gets taken off the list :lmao:. Try, try, try all you want but people who want something typically work very hard to get there.

EDIT: Looking at the dates now, seems like DRM might slow pirates for about 2-4 weeks on average just at a glance.

Still if that's all you need DRM for is that initial sales period then why not remove it after a month or two of being available on the market?

What makes DRM even worse, and this is specifically aimed at Denuvo, is the fact that it fucks with perfomance. There's actual evidence of games running better when Denuvo got removed. So along of doing nothing to stop pirating, it also messes with ingame perfomance.
