Metro 2033

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
So... here comes another First Person Shooter, Post-Apocalyptic, "Role-Playing Game" hybrid to add to the disgusting mesh of Borderlands and Fallout 3 type of games. It's starting to become a trend.

One of this one's genres is apparently Survival Horror (y'know, Resident Evil kinda horror) so at least there's something more interesting in there than the repetitive FPS games that keep on using the same Post-Apo wasteland kinda setting.

AFAIR is this game not based on an open world, it's more like Half Life² with "levels".
This and the fact that the book was actually good I'm really looking forward to play this.

Frozen STALKER much? Could be fun though.

That said, a new game company? Let's hope this doesn't end up being another vapourware game...

I'd recommend reading the book before you play the game. I don't know how the devs will handle the problem with the huge amount of non translated metro stations. There are a crapload of names like "sewastopolskaja" etc. which are not translated, it confused me a bit, but after a while its ok. There are also many political "parties" in there, I wonder how the devs will manage this...

^ If anything, I expect a poor translation similar to what games like STALKER and King's Bounty got (although KB wasn't quite as bad).

I haven't read the book, but to me it looks like yet another "pulp" sci-fi like the gazillion of the STALKER books there've been before and after the game release. I may be wrong about that, but my experience tells me that being skeptical about modern Russian sci-fi usually isn't very far from truth (as you can tell I'm not a big fan of Russian sci-fi after the 80s, Golovachev is about the only one who is still interesting to read).

As for the metro stations, is it that important? I mean, do the names relate in some way to the factions they house and stuff?Plus, "Sevastopol'" is a proper name anyway, with no way to translate. (I was born is Sevastopol' )

Looks like the start of a hype train to me. But it certainly looks more interesting than Fallout 3 or Borderlands. And I've heard good things about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, which I have yet to get.

I suggest not looking at the comments section for this video, 90% of them are about Fallout 3.

I really don't see how you can compare it to Fallout 3. To me, it's a high-budget railshooter version of STALKER. It's probably going to be great.

it looks like STALKER because its made by a bunch of Ex-GSC who got pissed off an quit, they also took the Alpha Version of the X-Ray Engine with them, which is what they used to make Metro 2033.

Because some people have never heard of other PA games, probably. If you recall, all of the STALKER games are PC-exclusives, while Metro is getting ported to consoles as well.

@UFT: Seeing how Metro looks a gazillion times better than any of the STALKER games ever have, I don't have an issue with that. Sometimes I imagine what STALKER would look like if those guys didn't leave. Not that I care, because my poor laptop can barely handle simple dynamic lighting in STALKER.

I hope this doesnt have to much RPG elements if any. Better a good well done shooter then a half done RPG hybrid.

The STALKER series are great games, and they count amongst my favourites.

If this is a Half-Life type shooter, I'll be disappointed. I expect at least an inventory, and equipment modification. I do agree, however, that a character development part, with XP points, doesn't fit into an FPS (because FUCK YOU, Bethesda).

It would also be nice to see a sandbox type game like STALKER.

From the previews it looked more like HL. I don't recall hearing anything about an inventory, although personally I don't see how it matters much in a game like this.

It allows for a lot of things. Quests with rewards, for instance. Some kind of minimal non-linear progression.

It's not an RPG ffs. Seriously. Most of the so-called "quests with rewards" in STALKER were so boring that the game would've been better off without them. I wasn't exactly a fan of having to micro-manage my inventory all the time and having to constantly backtrack to a trader to sell random loot off. That said, some sort of inventory was necessary in STALKER, given the game has all the stuff about "collecting artifacts" and whatnot.

Also, Crysis did well enough about "quests with rewards" without having an inventory. You take out an additional enemy outpost, you find supplies there, and your main target becomes easier to assault.

I really hope Metro won't have any FedEx quests, and I'm surprised anyone actually likes those.

As for the relationship between a game having an inventory and non-linear progression, I don't follow your logic. Maybe because in this case it doesn't exist  Plenty of games w/o inventory with non-linear progression out there, and visa versa.

I like "FedEx" quests that have unforeseen events. So they're not boring in principle, just in certain applications.

An inventory adds item management, hence "FedEx" quests that can be stacked up and resolved in any order.

I'm not saying a game has to be linear because it lacks an inventory, I'm saying that having an inventory pretty much guarantees non-linearity and weapon customization. And I wasn't bothered much by micro-management in the STALKER series, at least not in the latest game.

What I meant was that if this game follows the same basic mechanics as STALKER, it'll be great. Maybe the team left about the time that THQ cut down the first STALKER, because they thought the changes were too limiting. If that's the case, there's a chance they'll make Metro 2033 like STALKER was originally meant to be. But then again, since THQ is publishing it, maybe they'll do the exact opposite. We'll see when it comes out.

Umm, the whole point is to make a game NOT in the same vein as STALKER. If you want another STALKER game, best bet is waiting for STALKER2 trilogy.

inventory pretty much guarantees non-linearity and weapon customization

Aand, I'm saying that's bullshit. It's bullshit in either direction. When a new Diablo clone comes around, do you think "ooh, must be non-linear!" cause it has an inventory? Or a Resident Evil game, and the like. In fact, the two are completely unrelated.

Judging from the Wikipedia article, it'll be a sandbox game with an inventory, with minimal HUD. Probably much like STALKER was intended. Looking forward to this one.

With linearity I meant of the railshooter kind. In reality, all games are linear to some degree.

Regardless, we'll have to see when it comes out.

I still think your point lacks any kind of logic. I don't see what would prevent someone from making a railshooter with inventory. These days, inventory is basically a replacement for "healing packs" like in the games of old, since the mechanic is somewhat outdated.

Seriously, do you have to argue against absolutely everything in every game thread? I get it that you don't like STALKER, so don't play this game, because it will probably resemble it a lot.

Back on topic: I read in the wiki article that you don't have any meters at all in the HUD (I'll probably disable the crosshair if there is one) which is really cool. You even have to time your ascents to the surface since the air there is poisonous. Let's hope they pull that off better than in Lost Planet, where it was just stressful and felt heavily scripted.
