Modifying Fast Travel to make it more like FO1 and 2

I did a search of the Fallout 3 modding board and couldn't find a place where this was specifically addressed, if it has been already brought up and I missed it I apologize and you can stick this in the Vats ASAP.

Anyway, this morning I was playing FO 3 and had a thought regarding the fast travel. I'm sure all of us who have played FO 1 and 2 are frustrated at how FO3s fast travel is like a safe express lane trip from point A to point B.

Another related thought was regarding how the magic compass always knows which way you're supposed to go, even through underground tunnels and so on.

Since the game already has a script in place for figuring out your travel path (the magic compass) how difficult would it be for a modder to project your progress along that path and dump you out of the fast travel for random encounters?

This would do wonders for restoring the old school fallout feel and wouldn't be (I think) extremely difficult to script.

Scripting it, completely, with just fast travel, is doable - and the goal of F3C. However, showing your progress, step by step... I'm not sure. This does however require rebuilding the entire exterior world map.

The new fast travel in FO3 works more like a teleporter IMO. Like in Oblivion apparently.

I would like to see the old fast travel again. It just worked and I don't know why they changed it...oh yeah, because Bethesda like to copy and paste stuff :?

A bigger map might be needed for it IMO.

You already have such travel in the game. Its called not using fast travel and encountering things along the way.

Your basically saying "I want random encounters" which can be a pain in the butt and if you like that pain, don't use fast travel and you'll simply run around and away from things you don't want to fight or choose to deal with them.

Otherwise your simply having a statement in the program that stop the fast travel from the destination you choose which corresponds to some code number probably, and subsititutes for another location where the 'random encounter' stops your character to deal with it, and I assume you can then continue to fast travel after 'no enemies are nearby'.

I like fast travel and if someone makes a mod please allow us to click on if we want to use that option in your mod since if all things are great in the mod except that it weakens someones likely use of that mod. I can see how you might like the idea but if I just want to fight things in Fallout 3 I simply travel by foot.

I think it would be better to travel by motorcycle which increases speed and would function like a 'horse' you mount and thus give you increased speed.

One reason I want to rebuild the worldmap exterior and integrate old school fast travel is because the D.C. Wasteland is at a 1/60th scale of the real thing.
