Mutants + Energy Weapons?

I just completed the last mutant mission so I can recruit mutants now. I've noticed that a couple specialize in energy weapons, but when I give them a laser pistol, they can't use it. Which enery weapons CAN they use?
 
I think it has something to do with muties are only able to wield heavy weapons. try putting a gatling laser in his weapon slot. Hav'nt tried this myself though, cuz my squad is humans only.

As far as I recall only the gatling laser...
Anyway do the following, create a mutant in MP and on the equipment screen put several weapons on his hands, if the weapons remain there he can use it, but if the weapons moves to the inventory he can't...same for armour
 
i dont think so. to see if armor works try to stick it on him when you pick ur inven, if it goes it works. for weapons putem in his hands w/ammo fur them, start an mp game, load em, and if they not red they can be used
