Perks and joy in New Vegas
The apocalypse is much more popular than you'd think, the evidence of this is the brightly shining Fallout-franchise.

Although I hate dropping names, now I have to. Fallout: New Vegas is being made by Obsidian Entertainment which consist of former Black Isle Studios workers who have a lot of experience from the first two Fallouts. The game designer is Chris Avellone who has for example created the excellent New Reno-part in Fallout 2.
Avellone with his team was supposed to make Fallout 3 back in the beginning of the millenia. [TEXT ABOUT WHY VAN BUREN FAILED]. Under the new master Bethesda the project was dug out of ground and renamed as Fallout: New Vegas. New Vegas loans lots of ideas, characters and places from Van Buren. From it's genes Fallout: New Vegas is more Fallout 3 than Fallout 3 ever was.

    Happened in Vegas

On the Fallout timeline New Vegas takes 3 years after Fallout 3, about 200 years after the Great War, many decades from Fallout 2 but the area is partially same, the Mojave desert.
As the base for the area the team uses satellite pictures from Nevada. You'll get a picture of the area by searching Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Black Mountain, salt-desert and Goodsrping in Google Maps. Of course the reality is compressed as the distances are shorter and there'll all sorts of fun things on the path, like super mutants and dinosaur themeparks.
Unlike in Fallout 3, this world didn't stop after the Great War. New Vegas which rose on the ruins of the casino city rose to it's greatness (or something) when electricity for the neon-lights was gotten from the Hoover Dam. The oasis glowing in the night attracts a lot of people so the story wraps around the conflict of the citizens of the casino city, NCR and Caesars Legion.
The outcome is influenced by the hero who is found in the desert, face crushed by a bullet and with memory loss. The writer is saved from being dipped into imaginationstew only by character creation which is added to the game as recovery operation.
The face is changed in a bit where the doctor asks if he got the face looking like it's supposed to look. The caliber of the weapon seems to have been quite high, because in the same bit you can also change your sex. The skills are formed in the psychoanalysis. [SOMETHING ABOUT VIT-O-MATRIC]

My somewhat mediocre translation of the first page, nothing new really I guess.

    EDIT: whoopsie, Fall not Spring...

Nice one  Well, this article seems pretty competent, I have to say. Proper credits are given and also, they aren't affraid to criticize Fallout 3 and Beth.

By the look of the water pack on the Ranger's back (Assuming the PC can pick it up), constantly drinking might be automatic if your wearing the camel pack and have water in it. Just a thought.

dummy scarf, ridiculous knife placement, 'spurs', retarded armor coverage,...

    yeah, fuck that.

Pelit was an extreme quality magazine - and a strong bastion of turn based strategies/RPGs and PC gaming and was openly hostile to consoles even after its sister magazine doing console games was merged with it - from the early 90's it was created to the early/mid 2000's when it started to have competition from console developer and big publisher sponsored console magazines.

But since then - even though they used to raise themselves on a pedestal by criticising foreign gaming journalism doing it - they have had to give in on their corruption-free policies and start doing exclusives, 5-page long previews, "tours" funded by publishers, hyping and all that stuff.

Now looking later how this has developed, gotta say monopolies can have their good sides too.

Maybe there's still small splash effect in their office from the days they weren't afraid of criticizing big games. They still have some of their early days staff, this guy being one of them. Not-so-ironically IIRC he didn't do RPG's.

Seems like either Obsidian contracted an overseas (read Chinese) art studio for their concept art, or someone got a severe spelling problem at their offices.

Oh dear god, don't remind me of that movie

OT: Articles keep getting this wrong. The courier doesn't have amnesia. He just doesn't know who shot him or what was in the package. He probably doesn't know who to or from he was delivering.

Because having something to cover your head with in the desert is stupid.

Utility knife. Long as it's easily reachable (and it is), it's good.

Care to elaborate? As far as I can see, all the vital organs are protected.

Besides, the original Fallout's combat armour wasn't exactly the perfect coverage either.

I actually don't mind the spurs, it could just be a 'nice' touch on the devs part to make it more weasterny or it could potentially imply that the PC may be riding some sort of mutie-horse or some such. I know there's a speculation thread somewhere!

Shouldn't it be placed upside-down, though? Like in this picture.
It doesn't seem very comfortable to pull out with neither hand, that way.

"note how scarf is now tucked", hurr durr.

one would expect a ranger to be able to shoulder a rifle, don't you think?
oh, wait, there's a knife in the way! zomg!

and yes, even if he's left eye dominant, it's still retarded. when shooting around corners you'll switch shoulders.
i can get them wanting to add some western flavor to it, but those spikes are ridiculous.
most lethal area of the back is nearly completely exposed (kidneys)

what's the most common way to defeat an enemy force? flanking. you'll note that he has no armor whatsoever from the side and even his front plate is retardedly narrow in the stomache area. please don't tell me his arms will protect his side, because if his arms are there while he's fighting, he's doing something wrong. besides, even normal pistol rounds blast through an arm, no problem.

and if you're going to make a try at protecting the groin, do it well. not some half-arsed attempt like this.

neck protection would be nice too, but that would be a bit picky.

overall, the level of detail, design and craftmanship would put this between combat armor and metal armor. torso-wise, i'd say metal armor protects the wearer better and when comparing with combat armor, well, there really is no contest...
it should be noted that spurs are also still used for some american units who have long lost their pretty horsies.

Heh. I see logic in SuAside's logic: that knife is just totally misplaced.

Just don't think this looks retro-fifties in any way. Just like everything I've seen coming from the modern FO franchise.

Meh. Don't really care anymore, I guess. Looks more like something from GI Joe or Action Force to me.

It looks like the game moved to Europe or the prelude to invasion by a frontrunner of the Third Reichs undead nazi deathtroopers or something from Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Doom 3.

I'm a little puzzled, consider how far off the game is already, that they didn't go with some of those ridiculous WoW Epic Armor design with shoulderpads that shoot lightning and glow red with smoke..

Goddamnit, this is just concept art. In-game it looks better from what I saw (the pic where the PC shoots the grenade machine gun). I doubt that the knife on the armor will be even present in the game. Get over it.
