Backgrounds... BG2 is fine, but BG1 still needs a serious overhaul.

Also, IIRC, TOEE backgrounds are mostly 3D, unlike the solid painter ones in BG. So something like that would be pretty unlikely on the IE.

Bwaha, iOS port. Where did people ever get that idea from anyway?

This is awesome news and will be a great excuse to replay some BG (with some new content no less) and introduce the g/f to some Baldur's Gate goodness.

... I just hope they don't get greedy and charge full price. I'm thinking somewhere in the $19.99 range would sit right.

Somewhere on these boards you will find me stating months ago that these devices could be the best chance to reinvigorate classic style CRPG gaming. I can see a publisher being swayed to do a reboot more if it could be released on these popular new toys.
Will it introduce a whole new audience that wasn't interested in CRPGs 10-20 years agp? Still too early to tell. But if a BG pack is on the I-pad then it's easily the best game out for the I-pad.

Tons of old games got reboots on cellphones, smartphones, etc. So it's not that outlandish.

True, it's not outlandish. People were a little overly certain given that there was no actual evidence supporting that conjecture, though. Also, I usually don't see websites drumming up hype for mobile OS ports. And they're almost always console games.

I still have a soft spot for the Infinity Engine, it wasn't perfect, but the games associated with it are all fantastic - yep even the Icewind Dales. As for this "enhanced" edition - well the 2 Baldur's Gate games have already been enhanced with fan patches and mods, I can't see what else they can do with them.

What Atari and Wizards of the Coast should be doing is making a new Baldur's Gate with the Infinity Engine - and they might as well use the latest D&D rules, even though I prefer the 2nd edition rule-set. :)

Eh, it had some good games, but the engine itself was pretty damn horrible. Clunky, and rather ugly-looking. And gawd, the pathfinding. I also associate it with RTwP, which I dislike.

I do also have a feeling that they'll gobble up lots of fan patches and take credit  We'll see though.

Too true, but people where pretty forgiving because the games were so much fun to play - I always preferred to solo so I wouldn't be inflicted with stupid party members, there was nothing worse than losing a party member because they got stuck behind a rock while a Troll was biting their arse.

The fact this might be another kickstarter is a bit of a worry, I hope the industry tosses a few dollars its way, and doesn't just rely on fans.

God, please, no. You don't want to see Baldurs Gate on 4ed. rules. Or maybe you do, but it's like...Man, it's so shallow. They made it intro trinity, like in some freaking World of Warcraft or something. Haven't really experienced much of it, but most people hate 4ed. rules.
3,5 were fine, so if I were them, I would stick to AD&D or 3,5.

I'm not up to date with 4th edition D&D rules, 2nd edition was fine with me (was that BG2) - Icewind Dale 2 felt weird for some reason, probably something to do with the extra skills and feats (I wasn't use to it). Wizards of the Coast admitted they only changed the rules to the game to increase their sales, after every major upgrade they have a spike in sales.

That's why I'm saying - if they're doing a remake, the first thing they shoulda done is get rid of IE or completely overhaul it.

The reason being (obviously) that IWD2 used the 3.0 ruleset.

BG in 3.5 would be nice, it's my favourite (thanks to TOEE). Or maybe they'll convert it to 5e? I hear it's coming soon :D

Fuck that, I'm not giving a cent to a Baldur's Gate Kickstarter, given that it would be ultimately supporting a publisher, not a developer. Atari owns the rights and would end up owning the final game, not the dev.

True, it's painful to think of all the great games that could get sequels or be modded to perfection if Atari didn't pull the the plug on them.

At the time BG3 was dropped Atari were looking at a potential bankruptcy, so they sold off most of their studios and assets, including the D&D stuff, IIRC. My buddy who worked for Atari was laid off.

while I would love a BG3, I'll have to agree with you. if it's not done the "proper" way, I'm not interested. polishing the old games is one thing, having an unknown team create a sequel with a small budget is something else. if the original team assembled to do it outside of publisher control I'd be more inclined to give them my money.

Thing is, they wouldn't be able to do it outside of publisher control if the publisher owns the IP. You can't do a Baldur's Gate game outside of Atari AND Hasbro control.

Well, I'd rather it be Hasbro, they seem to be much nicer than Atari. I've been playing some DDO, and I have to say the game's been on the rise ever since they took over.

So this was finally released on the PC. iOS and Mac versions should be out in a week or two, and the Android version is currently TBD (though I'd guess December or January).

Pricing is right where I expected at $20. Anyone going to pick this up? Seems to be worth it if you're a fan and/or don't already have a copy (I don't). The enhancments seem to boil down to:

-"overhaul" of the core game code
-native support for modern resolutions and accompanying interface improvments
    -redone, hand-painted cinematics
-addition of Baldur's Gate 2 features like subraces and classes not originally present in BG1
-3 new party members who may actually be interesting
-new areas related to the new party members
    -a stand-alone Arena mode
    -online matchmaking across platforms
