Silent Hill: Homecoming

"Further reducing the terror is the fact that Alex is completely capable in combat. Unlike Heather, James or Harry from the previous games, Alex is a trained soldier that has some significant skills in battle."

That dooesn't sound good at all. If that is true, Silent Hill has gone all mainstream on us. I mean what made previous games (well maybe not 4th one) scary is the fact that main character was no fighter, just an ordinary person a lot of us could relate to.
Yet I'm not the one to trust reviews completely, so I'm still waiting for the PC version.

I liked how Resident Evil series shifted from survival horror to survival action, cause after I played first Silent Hill long ago, I just weren't able to be scared by RE anymore anyway, it just looked too cheesy and predictable.
But making Silent Hill to be more action oriented would seem like a blasphemy to me.

The readers have given it a much better review score.

I've learned that you can't spell "ignorant" without IGN.

Actually, it's no surprise that the game sucks...it wasn't made by the Original Developers.

It's not all that bad really, it's not "action-horror" your character is just able to defend himself, he's not unkillable or anything, being a war veteran he's just able to handle weapons better.

I just watched review on Gametrailers today, it looks surprisingly good, given the fact that its made by US mediocre developers. They also said that its less tense, due to Alex's combat skills, but it is worthy game..

Anyway, I finished only first three, never played The Room, and I dunno if am gonna play this.

One thing I've learned about Survival Horror.

If you make the combat easy, people will complain that it's not scary enough.

If you make the combat hard, people will complain that it's impossible to defend themselves.

There's no way to please everyone with a Survival Horror game unless you just call an action game with survival elements a Survival Horror game.

I think STALKER is the exception to that rule, even though it's not classified in the genre, general.
The whole interface for most survival-horror games is over 10 years old now though, and needs a revamp. Resident Evil 4 is the latest overhaul, and that still is half-assed.

Yeah.

The genre does need a revamp.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone is actually going to try and revamp it. RE5 is just RE4 in Africa with Co-op. Dead Space is just Gears of War in space.

Also, wouldn't it be cool to have a game that was essentially just the lab explorations from STALKER?

Those parts scared the shit out of me.

All previous SH characters particularly sucked at fighting but so did the enemies. The problem with Homecoming is that the player's improved combat skills aren't balanced out by stronger enemies, they're still slow and stiff like they were in the previous games. A lot of suspense is lost when you know that whatever is setting off your radio static is about to get its ass kicked.

The developers wanted SH style odd looking and moving creatues AND RE style easier combat controls. Pyramid head needs to be on speed to have the same effect he did in SH2, under such circumstances. Why is he in anyway?

Silent Hill 4 also sucked.

Disagree, SH4 was pretty awesome. I don't know where all the hate comes from, I thought it was better than SH3.

I believe it's because it was pretty different from other Silent Hill games in terms of atmosphere. I found it to be way less scary too.
But I did enjoy it enough to finish it two times. It is still worst SH game to me, but I think it is pretty decent game on it's own.

If someone played the fifth game already, I'd like to know about the puzzles? Are they there? And if they are there, what about the difficulty? See, I'm afraid it would be dumbed down for new console generation..
That "progress" shit makes really worried.

The new 2d controls are just shitty and also the invulnerable ghosts have sucked. I found it also stupid that just after I finished every bigger level-type, it starts again from scratch and I have had to wander through all the level-types again. Also the performance was really bad on my PC - and SH4 doesn't even look that good. SH3 was far better on a visual point and I have had never any performance problems with it.

True, the story of SH4 was good as usual but the negative parts are overwhelmingly in my opinion. I tried it several times, but I couldn't enjoy the game because of them.

I think ghosts were scariest enemies in the whole damn game. They can get pretty annoying, yeah, but they also added a lot of tension.
And the performance... Back then I played it with Geforce 4 Ti and didn't notice any problems.
I haven't noticed SH3 to be superior on a visual point, I think they are about equal in that department.
You do make a good point about having to go through all the same levels again though, that was a bit uncreative.

Penumbra Trilogy.

Haha exactly man. This series manages to scare the shit out of me. So much so that I've yet to finish Black Plague. It has surprisingly good writing too and the atmosphere is awesome. Too bad the little combat there is was atrocious because of the dumb system. Other than this, I indeed believe that the future of survival horror lies in that direction.

To each his own, I guess. A bud of mine disliked SH2 and that's my favorite. SH3 definitely looked great (I was blown away by characters' faces for some reason) but it didn't really add anything to the series, at least in my opinion. The story could have been better, considering where they went with SH2. I also remember not being able to get into the game and just not feeling it for almost the whole first half. There were too many 'tricks' used from pevious games that didn't work quite as well. It was a solid SH game but no more and no less.

That's exactly what this fifth one seems like to me. They don't dig deeper and they don't add anything new; they're using the old tricks to make it feel like SH, which ironically makes it feel like someone other than Team Silent is trying to make it feel like SH. Things could have been worse, of course, but it just makes the game completely uninteresting.

I wouldn't say that SH4 story is deeper than SH3 but the room was an awesome idea. Even though it was originally not supposed to do anything with SH series, it fit the setting perfectly. There were plenty of flaws and having to return to the apt to manage items was a pain in the ass but it was different while retaining the actual creepy feel of SH. There was a lot of potential and some of it was realized to create some scary shit in that room. Also, those things coming out of the walls looked badass. The 2d controls didn't bother me either because they could be changed in the options. Can't comment on performance, as I played it on PS2.
