Sir Edmund Hillary dies

Wild_qwerty

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
The greatest New Zealander to ever live passed away this morning :(

Not sure how many of you guys know about him, but he was the first person to climb mount everest and went on to help the Sherpas build schools etc...

The most well loved and respected Kiwi.... today we lost our best.

Its been a brief headline in the news here but thats about it. I've observed that America seems to be more interested about itself than the rest of the world while demanding the rest of the world have interest in it.

As you know, all good things must come to an end Qwerty. Now its up to a new generation to aspire to be just as great.

On an unrelated topic, generalissimofurioso your signature just blew my mind. I had no clue that actually happened.

It is annoying how you never pass up the oppurtunity to bash your own country.

I am sure America wasn't all pissed off when Bob Hope died and no one in New Zealand cared.

I was aware that Sir Edmund Hillary died when I heard the story on the news yesterday. The part of the story that struck me is that he and his assistant climbed Everest together but he never admited to the fact that he was the first of the two of them to reach the summit until after his assistant died.

That was incredibly humble of him and very refreshing to hear. I also seem to remember hearing him very angry about an Everest expedition leaving one of their members to die so they could reach the summit. He responded by saying something along the lines of "I wouldn't have hesitated to save a life even if it cost me my place in history."

That's becase its not very interesting news in comparison to other ssues at hand.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure someone cares, and he was a historical figure, but it really isn't newsworthy.

If he was an American, I would think it's just as much not newsworthy. Just how I didn't care when Evil Kinevil died.

Are you actually comparing Bob Hope (Who was incidentally British) to Sir Edmund Hillary? Really?

Yes, I didn't think that they could reintroduce The Punisher into standard Marvel continuity without making him cheesy and retarded like he was during the 90's.

But they did and watching him take down supervillains like Stilt-Man was just great.

That just goes to show what is deemed important these days.

Conquer the world's tallest mountain = boring

Jumping over things on a motorcycle = Interesting

Being a messed up has-been of a muscian fighting for custody of your kids = PAGE FUCKING ONE!

Your other points have been addressed by others here so no need for me to beat a dead horse

I merely stated a fact, the USA is self centered. This is not an attempt to "bash" my own country. I believe my country has the potential to be as great as it once was. With that noted, I feel that many of my fellow citizens are oblivious or do not recognize/comprehend the problems that we face. I wish to illicit change and bring notice to those problems. No, I do not think this is the venue for that change; however, it does not mean I should season my views here or anywhere else.

Edit: Note that the man we speak of should be considered an American hero as well. As it was pointed out above, he was part of an American expedition.

Don't whine, kiwis. You still have Zoe Bell.

lol, well techincaly Russel Crow was born in NZ as well, but we decided to let the Aussies have him once he started throwing phones at people, but by then the Aussies were trying to deport him to NZ

I do feel sorry for Tensing Norgay (not sure on the spelling) the sherper who climbed Everest with Hillary. He was a lot more than an assistant by the way, but history only makes a foot note to him. He was not even that well recognised in his home country, whereas Hillary was, he was in his shadow which is a shame.

The family traveled to the United States as passengers on board the SS Philadelphia. They were inspected at Ellis Island on 30 March 1908. Hope became a U.S. citizen in 1920 at the age of seventeen.

British born or not, he was an american citizen and an american hero. None of the work he did started in Britain, it was all USA based.

Hope performed his first United Service Organizations (USO) show on May 6, 1941, at March Field, California. He continued to travel and entertain troops for the rest of World War II and later during the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War. When overseas he almost always performed in Army fatigues as a show of support for his audience. Hope's USO career lasted half a century, during which he headlined approximately sixty tours. For his service to his country through the USO, Hope was awarded the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award by the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1968.

My point is simple. Bob Hope gave a lot to the world as an entertainer and "ambassador" to the troops but I doubt much of the world mourned when he past and I think America was just fine with it.

I think it is silly to take the death of someone in a generally uninteresting profession and use it as a platform to call your country self centered.

Do you really thing the average american will care when Steven Hawkings dies? I doubt it.

If you wanted to say we have short attention spans, I'd agree with you there. But to turn it into some sort of "America doesn't care about anyone" is just plain stupid.

OMG ANNA NICOLE SMITH DIED!!!!!!!!!! LETS TALK ABOUT IT ON THE NEWS FOR A ENTIRE FUCKING MONTH!!!!!

Thats the kind of shit Americans want to hear on the news. No one gives a fuck if he climbed Mt. Everest because he didn't have big tits and fuck everyone who was near him.
I disagree that Americans only care about themselves though. Most don't give a fuck about anyone at all.

Sorry for the outburst. Carry on.

To America and the troops? Possibly. To the world? Hardly.

That's because he meant very, very little "to the world". Really. Sir Edmund Hillary on the other hand...

I'm sorry, "uninteresting"? You consider exploring the world and adventuring "uninteresting"? Wow, I wonder what you do for fun...

I think they will. Definitely not as much as they should, but yes.

Not really my point. But I will agree with TorontRayne - Americans do like to hear about their own stupid spoiled parasite wastes of oxygen more than about pretty much everyone else.
