I come from a site that is heavily against change. Unless that change is Civ IV: then they all welcome change.

Civ IV revolutionized turn-based gaming. Fallout 3 may do that to FPS gaming.

So who here is against this? I suspect I will get 77 percent against Fallout 3.

I'm also completely new to this board (omg, newbie, in your speak). So I don't have a poll. Just place your opinions, Pre- and Post-Fallout 3.

i wouldn't say i hate it...but...(oh no the terrible "but")
and for the record i'm was never really in the must be iso/turn based camp...
as a sequel to the previous fallouts: doesn't look too good

as an rpg - doesn't look too good (even if its not so fallout like, at least make it a good groundbreaking rpg!)

as a good shooter - doesn't look too good

but it does look mildly amusing, and i'm hopelessly fond of the apocalyptic setting, so i'll probably try it once it turns up used somewhere. i just see no reason to give my money over to bethesda at this point. they lost me with oblivion and have since proven through their various bizarre design choices to be incapable of producing a good rpg.

so disappointed, saddened, and kind of shoulder shrugging about it.

FPS and RPG generally dont mix well. Look at Mass Effect. Its a good RPG (from my view) but totally junk as an FPS which isnt bad as I want an RPG.
My only major fear is that they will worry so much about VATS and FPS play that they will forget there is supposed to be a game.

As for Civ: It's more of a continuation of the serries and not really a major jump forward. I still think Civ:2 was a bit better.

I am keeping an open mind and will remain optimistic until I play it. I feel like I've waited too long to not get excited. In fact, I can't remember the last time I was anticipating a game this much.

That's why I fear my heart will break into a million little bits when I realize I'm playing Oblivion with guns.

What a novel and interesting topic. I'm sure we will get many new and exciting insights out of this.

I guess that's because it's not an FPS.

I enjoyed Mass Effect quite a bit, though in hindsight it doesn't seem all that good anymore for various reasons. Some of their design decisions were simply... awful. But since most of the flaws were not directly related to the combat system, I think Mass Effect shows that good shooter/RPGs are possible.

That's all very well but when a game switches developers, and in particular switches to a developer that many around here associate with bland, lifeless RPGs, a revolutionary sequel isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind.

I'm all for change... so long as it is positive. That's not to say I won't get my hands on Fallout 3 eventually, and attempt to enjoy it.

    Er, wait, what now?
How were Civ 4's game mechanics revolutionary for turn-based gaming? It introduced no new concepts whatsoever in the area of turn-based gaming.

Also, this thread smells a lot like troll.

to help give 'some' reference to the OP's question about how many haters...

The poll I have been running has a whopping 66 votes! (remember folks, don't vote more than once, as I am actually trying to see what's what..)

and after said 66 votey-clicks, here is what the general picture of things (ie, who likes / dislikes)

hope that helps shed some light.

66 votes is totally representative of the gaming populace! ;)

The only thing that poll tells is that 66 people, who visited your poll (whose demographics *may* be limited), are split in a 2-way (almost 3-way) tie about FO3.

well being that the only link to the poll exists in my sig on this site, 66 votes aint too bad... as for the demographics, well that'd be the population of this here web-board-muhjigger, supposedly mostly comprised of fallout fans.

I don't understand how a topic like this isn't shot down instantaneously.
Yes, many liberties have been taken in production for fallout 3. Same thing happened with the switch from 2d to 3d for many of my favorite console franchises (Zelda and Mario) and in the end (after lots of speculation, sweat, and tears) both of them preformed incredibly.
I also get the felling that Bethesda isn't to well liked and I would agree with alot of the hate that is posted about it. However, I fell the fourms have become a place where its about hating regardless of reasoning and It is realy disapointing to see this. Developers have been known to get better as they age.
Iv'e been a passive veiwer of these fourms for a long while but I just cant take it anymore this will mostlikly be my last and onlypost on here so go ahead and rip this thing a new one...

Thing is, they're not getting better, they're recycling the same old formula, all the while claiming "Look at us, we're innovative." Bullshit.

You cannot compare Zelda/Mario with Fallout 1/2 (I can't believe I just had to point that out)

So, NMA shouldn't provide "hate" based on the various videos, screenshots, etc, yet others can jump on the blowjob bandwagon for it?

Since this is your one and only post, good bye.

I picked up FO3 today, and it's more or less what I expected of it (what I expect from each of Beth's games since MW).

    I don't hate it, I think I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Me? Yeah... I finished Oblivion, because I didn't think it was absolutely terrible, just kind of "meh" compared to Morrowind.

I also got Little Big Planet today, and I think that LBP will probably take most of my time though.

Eh, I just a call that my pre-order was in. I'm debating whether or not I should pick it up, all the videos and the Harold voice acting tell me that it's better for me to keep my money in my pocket...

It's not the switch from 2D to 3D that pisses me off. I think 3D is superior to 2D in many ways and can - and is - being used to re-invigorate traditionally 2D games (see Diablo 3 for example)

But i agree liberties have been taken. For me the problem is that Beth clearly haven't invested in the FO IP. They've used it to make money. I just don't understand why a developer such as Beth buys a cherished design concept and then abuses it .... why didn't they just create some generic post-apocalyptic world and make a generic FPS based on it? They would have saved $ millions on buying the IP.

Actually, i know why they didn't. Because they want the fan-base. And that means us at NMA and others at Duck and Cover etc. A fan-base means garanteed buyers and publicity. Dumbing down the game itself and making it lowest-common-denomenator broadens its market appeal. And that means more $. Simple marketing, my freind.

So THAT is why i'm not gonna buy FO3.

So what will it be like when NMA is flooded with legions of fans of FO 3, who have never touched FO or FO 2 before, who don't know what Van Buren is, and who like teddy bear launchers?
