The Purpose of the Vaults

First time out of the vault
Hellu.

Just read the dev profile of Tim Cain, and found the answer from question number 10 quite interesting:

...there was sinister subplot about the real purpose of the vaults that I wish had been kept in Fallout 2.

Anyone know what sinister subplot he is talking about? I always found the Fallout 2 "social experiment"-explanation a bit unsatisfying. It'd be interesting to hear what the original plan was regarding the true purpose of the vaults.

That's it. He's referring to the cut feature of Vault City's central computer, in which you could access a file about the grand social experiment the Vaults were.

I think the "social experiment" was bad enough... to think the government trying to play god as it is... and then to hear that, my paranoia didn't ease at all after hearing that that was a possibility...

Grizzly: That's not in the actual game then? I have memories of reading about the social experiments on an Enclave computer out on the oil rig.

Ah well, it's been a whole since I played the whole thing through thouroughly, so it might just as well be my mind which is fabricating things. :)

Anyway, cheers!

A hint of the connection is still there. The large emblem from the Enclave foyer floor is also on the wall above the vault entrance.

The Vault Experiments make sense to me when you consider the Enclave's original plans to just get out of earth. It would't have surprised me if the USA had gone to Mars if not for the Resource Wars. Fusion Power makes everything easier. It's possible that the Enclave and Vault Tek probrably just hid in their own damn private vaults.
