    A theory:

I think it would be more organized and sensible to combine the unarmed and melee skills as one and the same. This is because they both use the same stat for damage, ST, and use similar perks. Actually, a lot of melee based perks effect unarmed as well, and vice-versa.

The retardation behind these perks baffle me however, even though a lot of melee based perks effect unarmed they still have a melee skill prerequisite. Why not one or the other?

So I say; combine the skills for more variety in weaponry and a more flexible and versatile build.

    P.S.
We can still call it melee by the way:

Ya know its not a bad idea at all but they would in turn need to come up with another skill to put in to replace that which was lost so what other skill would you like to see in the game that isn't covered by other skills (IE Crafting Armor would be covered by Repair and Making Chems would be covered by Science)

Totally true, but i really dont know why you would want to use melee/unarmed in FNV especially later on.

Incidentally I tried to use unarmed in an attempt to get the trophy on the ps3 that you get for dealing 10000 damage with your fists (I know i'm a trophy hoe), but I found when I was in Primm, I got absolutely destroyed by the gangers, but any way back on topic.

Yeah I think that would be quite good because it won't have as much fannying about with skills and skill points, but I don't get what dascyborg is talking about with a new skill, you wouldn't need a new skill at all.

I think that whoever was interested in another skill just wanted to balance things out so that we would have the same number of skills. Don't think that it's necessary, though-- sort of defeats the purpose IMO.

Because if you roleplay a Ranger, and a lot do this, you just NEED unarmed skill.

    I'm against merging them.

FO1-2:Melee, Unarmed, Throwing, Explosives, Small Arms, Big Guns, Energy Weapons
FO3:Melee, Unarmed, Explosives, Small Arms, Big Guns, Energy Weapons
FONV:Melee, Unarmed, Explosives, Guns, Energy Weapons
    FO4:Melee, Explosives, Guns, Energy Weapons
    ...
    FO7:Combat skill

The way those skills are in New vegas is the right direction IMO. With Unarmed you just punch and have a few special skills, while Melee has some throwing and "unconventional" weapons like the chainsaw and the thermic lance. The next games should focus on that.

    Unarmed isn't tied to ST.

Unarmed is actually tied to endurance and luck in FNV, on the vault it says Unarmed is: 2 + (End x 2) + (Lck / 2), I just thought it was worth mentioning, for example, having 7 End and 3 Lck you will have 17 (you round down the luck) unarmed before you tag it, your Fallout maths lesson it over.

Yeah I really dont see the point in taking away all these combat skills, I see the point in taking away big guns and throwing but thats about it, taking away combat skills can ruin some peoples role playing experience.

He was talking about damage not the initial skill level. ST gives a little damage bonus to Melee weapons but has nothing to do with Unarmed damage.

I'm afraid to say Unarmed damage is affected by strength, it is a derived statistic of strength. You just divide your strength by two and get your unarmed damage.

"Just as in Fallout 3, unarmed damage is unaffected by strength"

"Unarmed damage is governed directly by the Unarmed skill.

    (Unarmed skill/20)+0.5"
