Video playback issue

I wouldn't make a topic here unless I have done all I knew to solve it and couldn't find any help on the first page of some google searches. Which happens to be the case.

It's a strange issue that is hard to put into exact words. At least not exact enough for google.

What happens is that with any kind of video file playback, I get graphical glitches across my screen, they're just lines. But then the screen moves. So the right side of the screen comes up on the left. Then what happens, if I do not move the video off the screen/close it, the screen goes either blue or gray. It seems to freeze my computer, as alt-f4 doesn't close whatever video/program is active and such. Youtube videos work fine however. But there was some tiem in which they didn't. It's a strangely evolving problem.

So far I've tried updating my drivers and switching playback software, but neither worked.

It's made it impossible to watch my movies or any video files. And that's very bad. I need that.

Try swapping your GFX card. I'm guessing your comrade is nearing to meet the machine god.. I had the same issue with my 9500GT. If you updated any codec packs, try removing them one by one. Also try running safe mode just to be sure. Report back with results.

Check if your card is getting hotter than usual, while not very likely , it might be that it got toasted and is ready to for the eternal computing lands.

Well the problem lies really only in actual video files. And some internet playback.

I play Skyrim regulary with all settings maxed, an enb on and only shadows on low for my fps' sake. And my computer does completely fine with that. I don't see any textures issues there either, which I'd have before on my laptop when it overheated.

It really seems like a software issue to me. Could reinstalling the driver do any more good than updating it as I previously have? I can only guess what might be the issue if it isn't the driver since this isn't bound to vlc for example which I play stuff with. I have the same issue with windows media player, home cinema gobbledygook, trailers in the steam store(although that not anymore, it's strange how this thing goes back and forth) and some videos on the internet that aren't youtube, but mostly those work fine.

Just reinstall the whole OS, i think it will be faster, or maybe that's just my Ubuntu mindstate talking.

Also, I'm far too lazy to reinstall windows.
I'd rather jack my screen into my laptop to watch movies.

I am this *holds fingers together* close to fixing this issue. I now know what is causing it, but for the life of me can't remember the name. There was a certain menu of a certain program that has support for playback of video files. There's a checklist for every type of file, like .avi. I once found a way to fix Dark Souls having a black screen on the main menu which was apparantly caused by issues with the logo which was a .avi. Someone told me where this program was and I unchecked .avi files in it. That fixed it.

So what happened now is that I can play .avi files again without graphical/freezing issues. So I know that the problem lies in this video codec/driver type program but the problem is finding it again. I think, with things being this vague I probably have a better chance of finding the original dark souls solution than any of you knowing what I'm talking about though. But I'd like to get this issue behind me either way.

when you launch the video, look at your systray and see what new icons pop up.

if you are using w7 or w8, make sure to go into the notifications/alerts and make sure any new/codec related items are set to show.

Sounds like a codec install issue is likely. Tried that out?

Barring that I'd say it could be a hardware flaw, but if it's not fixed by using another graphics card then that's probably not the case.

I tried installing that, it broke .avi playback for me again.

It does seem to be some type of codec issue though.

The problem with this problem is that it's so hard to describe not even google knows what you're talking about.

EDIT: Or it didn't break shit. I don't fucking know anymore. I'll have to give my cousin's computer shop a call, he's pretty handy.

Hmm, and also steam trailers don't bring up the issue anymore. I'll try downloading some mp4's or mkv's.

So it looks like a 600 mb .avi file works like a wonder, and a 2.7 mb .avi gives my pc the heebie jeebies.
