I have gone through with 3 different characters and the key to the shed in the Scrapyard still eludes me. Anyone that can point me in the right direction?

Key to the shed in ScrapYard?
Could you please be more specific? What is the key titled. If it is for the shed you have to Have the contract killer perk to go inside.
Or if its johns key there is a Broken bus with a locked storage, It is full of magazines.

About the Key
I assume you mean the key that opens the shack. There is no way to open the shack unless you have the contract killer perk which can be obtained at level 14.
In the shack is a man sitting by a desk and he will ask you to kill good people and bring him back their ears.
You get 15 caps per ear and bad karma. So if you want to be a good character do not do this.
