    about crossbows in this thread...

But for the above reasons, I'm fine without crossbows. I like having my options of hot, spicy death though...

Spears are easier to make, not to use. Thats why spears were discovered before crossbow. Since when it is easier to use thrown weapons then point-and-shoot weapons?

Is also why the crossbow helped phase out the longbow. You needed years of training to fire a bow accurately, not to mention tremendous strength, while anyone could pick up a crossbow and shoot it. Thats why King Richard the Lionheart was killed by a mere boy. With a crossbow. Like a BOSS.

    From Wikipedia:

In Europe, British based Barnett International supplied crossbows to Serbian forces which according to The Guardian were later used "in ambushes and as a counter-sniper weapon", against the Kosovo Liberation Army during the Kosovo War in the areas of Pec and Djakovica, south west of Kosovo.[49] Whitehall launched an investigation, though the department of trade and industry established that not being "on the military list" crossbows were not covered by such export regulations. Paul Beaver of Jane's defence publications commented that, "They are not only a silent killer, they also have a psychological effect". On 15 February 2008 Serbian Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac was pictured testing a Barnett crossbow during a public exercise of the Serbian army's Special Forces in Nis, 200 km south of capital Belgrade.[50] Special forces in both Greece and Turkey also continue to employ the crossbow.[51][52] Spain's Green Berets still use the crossbow as well.[53]

In Asia, Chinese armed forces use crossbows at all unit levels from traffic police to the special force Snow Leopard Commando Unit of the People's Armed Police and the People's Liberation Army. One justification for this comes in the crossbow's ability to stop persons carrying explosives without risk of causing detonation.[54] Furthermore, during the Xinjiang riots of July 2009, crossbows were used alongside modern military hardware to quell protestors.[55] The Indian Navy's Marine Commando Force were equipped until the late 1980s with crossbows supplied with cyanide-tipped arrows, as an alternative to suppressed handguns.[56]

For the whole 'silence gun' discussion, please take a look at the following video it explains quite a lot about silenced weapons:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhwWS5sU1tU

Not to forget guns to be really created for silence...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCiQX6GDJ9g&feature=related

So sure, they make noises. But so does the crossbow, if you ever saw a video of crossbows shooting, you hear sound of the mechanical movement, sames for the gun. And no, i'm not saying that they near in noises or whatever, i don't know how similar their noises are....

But back to topic, there could have been crossbows, but given how the Fallout world 'failed' to produce some technological things we would miss, it could also be the case that no one used modern alloys and such for modern crossbows.
And old style crossbows had their major downsides compared to guns or even bows (slower reloading, less range, less ammunition, such things, less stopping power; such things).
So sure they could have added some, if they though they should be in.

For all we know now, they're not in because they didn't want to animate them. So viable - sure, necessary? Nope.

Sawyer just outright stated it's too much trouble to animate one. That's it, no more explanations needed, can this topic be finally led to rest now?

I don't mind one way or another they are in the game or not, they wouldn't really be out of place if they were in the game, but at the same time given other weapons available it isn't missing them too much either.

The main thing I would like crossbows for is for a ranged poison delivery option. There a bunch of poisons in the game and while thrown weapons and melee weapons are cool for poison use, they do get old sometimes.

If there was to be a crossbow in the game I'd give it similar stats to something like a throwing spear or tomahawk, but with better range (although with significant spread) and maybe -10 DT on top, but with a rate of fire and reloading slow to the point it would be ineffective against anything there required more than one shot to kill.

    Um lets break this down.

One of them requires ONE simple action: You extend your arm toward the target and let go of the aforementioned spear.

The other, requires MANY actions including Loading, Cocking, Aiming and Firing, all of which other than pulling the trigger are not second nature.

Ignoring the construction phase entirely, the spear is obviously easier to use for someone who has never seen one before. Throwing an object at a target is one of the first and most simple weapon skills developed by man.
While it may seem simple to someone who HAS SEEN A CROSSBOW USED, it is not naturally easier to do for everyone else than a simple behavior developed by ancient man.

In addition to spears requiring you to perform and perfect less steps to use it effectively, the spear is a multipurpose tool and weapon, where the crossbow is a niche weapon that is effectively worthless for much else.

Slapdick security forces use a niche weapon on unarmored targets. This has been established.

Newsflash: A gun doesn't require cyanide tipped bullets to kill shit in one shot, where it stands.

I still say that with the overabunence of firearms - even amongst tribals it seems - the idea of the Crossbow would never have been thought of, i.e. they would never have conceived such a device.

Wasn't the Crossbow originally created as a simple medieval to the Bow? Something that the untrained pesants could fire without serious training? Total Warfare on that scale doesn't sound like something that the tribals or anyone else needs to prepare for and those we have seen who do - both tribals and wastelanders - just use guns.

So yeah, as far as I am concerned, whilst some of you can post why the post-apocalyptite might use a crossbow the fact that we haven't seen the scenario pan out on either coast should be an indication that it did not happen that way.

Not really? I meant it in a broader sense; they were invented as tools for assassins, but rather broader applications, like not hurting people's ears. That it takes away the 'crack' of a gunshot, which people generally identify as a gunshot, meaning that when people hear the rest of the noise, they generally don't think it's a gunshot, is just a benefit.

So you're right in it's a use, but not in that it isn't the main or 'real' purpose of a suppressor.

And the whole being less apparent thing works better farther away than up close.

 Are you actually saying that learning how to throw a spear is easier then using a crossbow? One of the reasons crossbow was made is because anyone could use it after a 30 second instruction. Suddenly even church was against it becuase heavily armored troops were being struck down by 70 year old peasants.

It's a point and shoot weapon and the basics of it's use can be mastered in half a minute while learning how to throw a spear is a goddamn art.

I'm not talking about some advanced shooting skills but a mere learning of the basic use. With a crossbow, you don't need some special training to hit a target that is 15 meters away from you. Try throwing a spear on that same target.

Replace the word "crossbow" with any other weapon.

Reaplace the word "crossbow" with "flamethrower", "ballistic fist", "rocket launcher", "grenade launcher", "power fist", any sort of mine, grenade or explosive, "................

Green Berets and FSB are "slapdick security forces"? Intredasting, highly intredasting.

Neither does a crossbow, point? :|

And the fact that we've seen more of those being used than any crossbow should indicate that no-body thought to make a damn crossbow.

... in your opinion. Immediately after the war in concrete jungles like LA, people still used guns and those niche weapons, to the rural sticks of Shady Sands, people still prefered and used those weapons. abd in the tribal zones of Utah and Arroyo, people still used those weapons. Ergo, re-discovering the crossbow has never been a first on anybodies mind; it's not your idea is some unappreciated genius, that isn't an in-lore explaination, rather it must be that guns are more common in the world.

I'm not trying to dispute that guns in Fallout universe are much more common (wich is retarded by it itself), are generally way more practical, etc. I'm just saying that it would be great if you could find/build a crossbow as a unique or semi-unique weapon somwhere/on someone.

Guns are pretty common in the Fallout universe, it make sense. But where all the plenty of ammunition is from? After the years of war and years of scavenging, without a working chemical industry?
Now this is an oportunity for a crossbow! 8-)

    1. I'm not actually saying that. What I'm saying has been posted already. I am not here to comprehend what you read for you.

Here are some words for you NUANCE, STRAWMAN. Look 'em up kiddo.

    2. Ok. I will replace the word crossbow with "rock". Wait that's just as easy to use as a throwing spear and easier to make.

    You had a point?

    3. Explosives are worthless except as weapons? What?

That's the stupidest thing anyone has said in this thread so far and you've been posting in here quite a bit.

    4. Spanish Green Berets When was the last time they even fired a weapon or engaged in war? oh yeah.

Russian Security Forces LOL. They can't keep a plane in the air, or make a car worth buying but they must be amazing at keeping things secure. wait..

    5. You are incorrect. Have you ever killed something with a bow or a firearm?
You can put an arrow or bolt or quarrel or w/e right thru a mammal and they will still be alive hours later unless you hit a spot the size of a baseball and pierce their heart and lungs or blow it right through their head. (both require exceptional aim)

Hit them the same way FROM 10 TIMES THE RANGE with a single 30 cal rifle round and you will be hard pressed to find their head.

    Troll more zzzz
