Monitor upgrade... I think my brain is exploding

I just went from a 17" laptop screen to a 27" LED monitor. This is crazy, I feel like I'm looking at everything in one of those FPS video games where you can change the Field-of-View (FOV) through the console, and I changed the FOV to like 150 or some shit. There's even a curved illusion, like it's concave or something, which I guess is my brain going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH and trying to make sense of this vast array of display space.

I don't really have a point or a question or anything, I'm just sharing my overwhelming eyeball-brain experience to the universe.

I recently got a 23" HD screen. Used a 19" lower resolution one for years, so not a very big change there. The HD resolution makes quite a difference, however, as does the noticably better contrast and colors (much better panel) on this new screen. I could never switch back to the old one now . Also, the 19" 5:4 configuration was kind of weird, looking back on it now.

1"=?cm

Just saying. The whole inch thing has always been weird to me.

Also, you all really like it big, huh?

I was just saying that inch measurements (and all the other in the same "category") have always confused me to hell.
My limited knowledge is they were the whims of past kings, like the measurement of his knuckle and armlength or some shit. Really stupid ways to measure, but that's America for ya ;)

27 in = 68.58 cm
Anyway, that thing really is damn big. It's long as half of my room.
Are you Harry Potter?

No, but the approx. free space in my room (which is somewhat irregularly shaped) is somewhere around the size of his.
In reality, his room isn't that small, it's just that it has a low ceiling, being under stairs and all, so it gives an impression.

Somewhere in here there's a joke about you preferring small and irregularly-shaped over big and wide. ;)

:smug:

When i swiched from a 19 to a 23, i had to pull back the monitor, because i felt like tipsy watching at the monitor, trying to make sense of the new perspective. Now it seems completely normal, but no sure if i want to switch... actually i now feel the urge  to switch to a 27 also. Damn you.

www.Newegg.com has deals fairly regularly, I got this one for 200$US w/ free shipping!

These are beauthiful prices for me, but first, i'm not sure anyone in this world ships to Lithuania and second, i still get to pay custom taxes (3%) and value-added taxes (21%), since it's not from EU. I still would probably save a couple of dollars, but not worth the effort. I envy your prices though.

I got a. . .20 or 21 inch, don't remember, widescreen screen for 90 euro's. It was a brotherly discount.

I'm perfectly fine with my two 19" and 17" EIZO LCD panels, there's not any modern game yet which would have forced me upgrading my prehistorical machine. We'll see what happen after releasing Wasteland 2, but that's a question for another year. 24" IPS LED EIZO is my hot candidate, which can be obtained for some 300-320€ here in Slovakia right now (and still dropping).

Don't you need high end graphics card for running games in fullscreen mode with such a monstrous monitor?

Yup, especially when you're trying to watch movies with a widescreen aspect ratio. It's a good compromise for games though, you can play older stuff designed for 640x480px in fullscreen mode and even modern 3D games doesn't look that bad.

Apparently not; it's been working just fine. I was a little concerned about that myself, but actually the opposite is true most of the time -- with the laptop closed and sending display via VGA, it actually runs much cooler and gets slightly better FPS.

Big wide-screen monitors like that are nice for watching movies, too. It's the next-best-thing to seeing them on a big screen in a theater, IMO. Just make sure you have a comfortable chair and don't sit too close.
