Best Alien/ Scifi movies?

Armageddon, if that counts. I also thought Red Plant was a pretty good movie.

Armageddon? I honestly have to ask if you're serious or joking.

Are you saying that because you didn't enjoy the movie or are trying to say that it's not a scifi?

Oh crap, I forgot all about Enemy Mine, and I was so damn happy when I found it on DVD.

I liked it enough that I bought the book collection by Barry Longyear on which it is based.

Dunno if anyone's said it but I love Predator. Yeah it's corny and Schwarzenegger's a moron but god that alien is incredible. I love how they're all being hunted down one by one. Just thought I'd throw it in :P

All the movies from my DVD collection have already been mentioned.
There are some cheesy ones I like but I would definitely not recommend them as good sci fi.

Instead I will mention a movie I saw on television, the original Andromeda Strain.

Predator, Terminator, and Total Recall are all good in my book. Three of the four best Arnold movies, they are (Conan the Barbarian being the other one, of course).

arnold's alright, i just wasn't sure of NMA's general opinion. apart from terminator and predator there's not much else by him i like. i should check out total recall

I think it can be said in general that Arnold was an good actor and while most of his movies would not win a price in depth and story telling, they sure are entertaining movies in their own right. I mean what kind of world would that be without any room for trash-movies anymore with cool oneliners thrown around by a guy in muscle shirts killing terrorists/monsters? In that sense?

GET TO DA CHOPPA!!!!

In no particular order:

- Gattaca
- Moon
- Stalker, filmed in my home town
- Solaris, the Soviet one
- Time Machine's a classic
- Planet of the Apes although not all of them are very good
- 12 Monkeys, also the inspirational short: La Jetee
- Dark City
- Blade Runner should probably be here, but I have my problems with it
- Brazil
- Forbidden Planet
- Ghost In The Shell, anime, sure, but a very good one. I'd have put Akira here as well, but that one is bordering on goofy..
- another anime I'd include in this list is Angel's Egg, artsy, but I recommend
- I loved Johnny Mnemonic as a kid and it's stayed as a good memory

of the goofy/bad ones I've seen I'd bring out three:
- Kin-dza-dza! is very goofy, but very good, Soviet thing
- Barbarella
- Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
- Total Recall
- Tank Girl, haha!
- A Boy And His Dog

of the ones with monstrous aliens:
- Alien, duh, also: not all of 'em are good. those AvP flicks? pure shit
- Predator
- The Thing, woop dee doo!
- Deep Rising was helluva entertaining
- Avatar - who doesn't like Pocahontas?!

the original RoboCop films were cool, too and as a kid I really loved The Ewok Adventure 8-)

2001: A Space Oddyssey was waaaay too abstract for me. [spoiler:1e806143ac]The much praised evolutionary turning point scene was laughable and the space scenes ... artsy, but didn't cut it for me, although I do understand it might have been a big thing back in the day, I still think it was more about the big name on the poster[/spoiler:1e806143ac]

I probably left out a bunch, a few years ago I binged for two months straight, sometimes three films a day - old and new, good and superbad alike. Also I can't remember all the names for the Soviet ones, they had some great fucking sci-fi films.

Sadly the latest films (not including Moon, that one's awesome) are mostly super conceptarted (yeah, I made it into a verb...) action flicks with zero plots.
