Well, this is going to be a crappy day for the Chinese head of the propaganda department. They were doing well, inciting furor in the populace over the Japanese detention of a fishing boat captain/hero/Chinese intelligence operative that invaded Diaoyu islands and rammed a Japanese patrol vessel. This was great in rallying up anti Japanese sentiments and making people forgetting about what a crappy job the government is doing about all the disaster recovery efforts and rebuild efforts and the state of the housing bubble and foreign pressures to rise the yuan. I would love to see how they are going to deal with this one.

There are already CCP members vandalizing his wiki page. It's kinda funny that CCP bans wiki/youtube from its internet, but has some of its brainwashed kissers trying to sing praises of China on wiki and youtube pages, and has them arguing for China for anyone dare to question what CCP does.

Going to be entertaining to see what the official reaction will be. Going to be interesting to see when the winner himself learns of it.

Official reaction is in, fresh from wiki:

All news about the announcement of the award was immediately censored in China. Foreign news broadcasters including CNN and the BBC were immediately blacked out after mentioning the award in China.[48] Web searches for Liu Xiabo were immediately deleted and no information can be searched about him in China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement that said, "The Nobel Peace Prize is meant to award individuals who promote international harmony and friendship, peace and disarmament. Liu Xiaobo is a criminal who has been sentenced by Chinese judicial departments for violating Chinese law. Awarding the peace to Liu runs completely counter to the principle of the award and is also a desecration of the Peace Prize."[49] The state-run Xinhua News Agency later carried a report saying that awarding Liu Xiaobo the prize “defiles” (褻瀆) Alfred Nobel's purpose of creating this prize and "may harm China-Norway relations". The spokeperson added that Liu had broken Chinese law and his "actions run contrary to the purpose of the Nobel Peace Prize."

Official Chinese government response

The Norwegian ambassador to the People's Republic of China was summoned by the Chinese government on 8 October 2010 and was presented with an official complaint against the granting of the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo

I am, of course, laughing my arses off, because, if you understand Chinese culture at all, you would know that this is a huge slap in the face for those that manoeuvred him into jail for their own political purposes. There are some rumours that china will stop buying oil from Norway, but given the Chinese need for immediate economical expansion to appease its own citizens(so they don't get rid of them like all the other "Emperors"), that seems unlikely. lol, It's nice to see someone still have the balls to snub CCP who often tries to use racism and playing the victim as counter arguments to anyone who accuses it of wrong doing.

Edit to add: I just did a quick sweep of youtube, and CCP kissers are hard at work - playing victim, talking about racism, white people aren't so much better, the Peace Prize is irrelevant, and one of my favorite, China is doing so great so why does it need a voice for the people or a democracy? Your tax dollar at work, Chinese people, I can say brainwashing is successful.

lol, just got some news that the full force of CCP is out to censor this information in China. Foreign ministry, Public Security Ministry, PLA, Propaganda department, Xinhua, CCTV, and etc are all out in force to eliminate all trace of this year's Nobel Peace Prize from any media accessible form China. A lot of people with questionable English is out in force to discredit Liu in foreign media sorces, websites, and there are many attempts to ridicule Nobel committee by some kind of coordinated action. I am impressed, China can do it when it puts its mind to it.

All people connected with charter 8 and all of Liu's known associates are already taken in for questioning (come to the Public Security office for tea, as they say).

You know, this almost feels like a movie scene, except that you probably won't get an happy ending. V for Vendetta comes to mind.

Hehe the norwegian goverment is a bit pissed atm. Since we were just about to do a trade treaty with the chinese. Now it looks like it will fail.

well what is more important economy or human rights ? I know the answer. By the way the chinese will typicaly play the offended nation and in the end still do the buisness with either norway or other nations simply cause they dont want to loose their face. They are not that stupid to ignore the potential outcome of such contracts or future buisness. Compared to the 60s or 70s china today is what many forget quite "liberal" (as said compared to the past). THings are improving but it needs time. The nobel prize is helping in that process. At the moment I find it somewhat wrong how many westen nations like Germany kiss the chinese *** just to keep a healthy economical relationship. But they seem to do the same with Russia as well.

I never really understood why specifically the Nobel prize has become THE prize that is recognized as the most important, like the 'oscars' of science/literature/etc. The money that goes along with the prize isn't even that much, there are bigger prizes in terms of the money that goes along with it. So it's all about the PR - value that goes with a prize making the whole thing an exercise in politics.

Giving prices for 'peace work' makes the thing even more ambigous. Didn't they already give one to Obama, even he was like wtf? That was weird.

I think its more about to honor people for their work. I mean it is somewhat noteworthy when a doctor finds ways how to save the life of patients or if they spend most of their life researching something. The money probably is not the bigest factor here. By the way for someone who got the prize and is fighting for peace for example publicity is probably the best as seen with the chinese now. So I think it is somewhat a good thinh if the media does spend some 5 minutes to report about it before they return again to americas next idol or other crap.

How does this selection process have any more integrity than American Idol?

Kissinger has a NPP but not Ghandi? Arafat/Peres/Rabin - who's next for the NPP Tom & Jerry?

At least this Chinese guy seems relevant. But I have to wonder, with the backlash it creates (reinforcing Stalinist paranoia and censorship/propaganda), if it hasn't set the cause of humanity back in China even further.

It's one things to throw out cute little softballs like Obama and Al Gore, it's another to court controversy for it's own sake to the detriment of the people for whom the recipients are supposed to be helping, no? Intentional or not.

That's awfully counter-productive just to push your own political agenda. Meanwhile, this poor dude is in some Chinese Gulag I assume? I bet he got a little extra special attention when this news came down.

@StarSeeker, I've spent a lot of time in Japan, so I'm well aware of the the Orwellian hate-week type "spontaneous" demonstrations they hold against the Japanese (not to say they don't have a gripe about issues like state visits to Yasukuni Shrine, whitewashed history textbooks, Nanking, Unit 731 etc.). But what I always wonder is to what extent the Chinese (and more so N. Koreans) actually buy into it, or if they are just going along so as not to wind up in something akin to the Gulag Archipelago themselves. I'm sure it runs the gamut, any insight?

I'd still prefer a more global prize system that wouldn't be governed by any couple of nations (Norway & Sweden). Don't expect any peace prizes given to people who oppose the wars those two nations take part in.

You answered it by your self.

Did I said its perfect ? But whats perfect already. Letz not exagerate it or dramatize it. I do not dissagree that handing out a prize to Jassir Arafat is without irony. But at least with such prizes or institutions the situation gets pushed something in to the public and media. Thats the point. What ever if the people deserve the prize or not is a completely different matter. But sometimes the right people do get the correct prize. And thats the point. In the end everything is just about politics (just as it was behind it this time probably).

I know, I'm just kind of tossing these questions out at no one in particular.

I don't think it helps the prestige of the award when they go for pure politics and no substance like Obama. It's as if they gave it to Obama for what they hoped he could be, for their romantic notions of what he represented, which in hindsight, hasn't really manifested itself into much of anything.

When they make shallow moves like that they just look like cheerleaders shaking their pom-poms, not unlike the 12 y.o. girls holding up signs at American Idol.

Yeah, they really undermined their credibility when they did that. When I first saw Obama had won I thought it was a joke. Now they do something respectable with the award and it's less meaningful than it might have been.

The Nobel Peace prize has always been a bit crappy. Heck it went to Henry Kissinger in 1973 and Mother Teresa in '79 despite her doing sod all except possibly convinving a lot of people to die horrible slow deaths.

I do like how one of the Science winners co wrote a paper with his pet hamster though. That's the kind of thing I like to see. :V

Rofl..., I don't know how to explain this properly, but, if you really think that way, more power to you.

You can take a quick look at this for someone who tried that:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_massacre

As for how Chinese people see/feel about Japanese people? Well.., hm..., depends on the generation or the location of the people you talk to.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_of_nanjing

Does this ring a bell?

What about unit 731?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731

The only reasonable comparison I can give is that - It's kinda like asking how African Americans or Aboriginals feel about how European Settlers treated them in the days gone by. Of course, I personally don't believe in punishing the children for the sins of the parents, but that doesn't stop even the most rational people. And, a lot of people don't understand this -

Chinese people are indoctrinated, or brainwashed when they are young like the North Koreans. If it weren't for the Chinese innate practicality and the ingrained ideals of selfishness (inability to really work well together), CCP/CPC might have had a more cattle like populace like North Korea.

For those that don't understand what this Peace Prize might signify for the CCP and why it does so much to cover it - It's Shame. Face is worth its weight in gold in Asian societies. Your social credibility is your total networth as an individual, and without it, you are worthless/your words will never be taken seriously/worthwhile. That's why the Chinese sets up layers and layers of bureaucracy to diffuse all responsibility. A slap on the face like this is akin to saying that CCP is not really trustworthy and it has lost a lot of face. This is considered a huge loss of power, and if you lose enough of it, your words would have no weight and you will be replaced.

Then again, it's difficult to explain this unless you've really lived there and get to know its people really well. Most westerners just get blinded by the high rises/buildings, lights, the amount of people, and how much money they might make from 1.3 billion people. The funny ones get pissed off at the wrong things, like traffic and rude people Well, if China was easy to get, maybe we wouldn't have so many China "experts" making these kind of money all over the place. :P

edit to add: Well, after thinking over it a bit, in the end, the only people that has any right to talk about Peace or Justice are those with power to do so, isn't that right? The winners are the ones that writes history books. If the US didn't decide to suppose China to enter the security council and booted out Taiwan, and given it plenty of face and perceived power diplomatically, who knows, things might have been different.

Nice to see someone here equally interested in the Chinese happenings. You make me jealous by being in Beijing while I miss it so much, man :P

China is doing so great so why does it need a voice for the people or a democracy?

Typical justification of authority by result. May seem ridiculous but is ultimately effective while it lasts. China seems to be on the rise at the moment, so that is likely to be one of the dominant arguments that people in China are willing to accept. Overall, it's all just polemics though, another "conflict" with CCP that will lead to absolutely nothing just like the previous ones. Everyone will just agree to work on CCP's terms for as long as China is the most attractive market in east Asia. Nobel Peace Prize being the source of dispute only undermines any influence this could have, since it's pretty much a load of bull.

Thanks for posting up the news though. This looks like a juicy piece of information that will contribute nicely to my Chinese Literature thesis as an example of modern-day social and political patterns as criticized by Lu Xun back in the 20s. Seriously, nothing changes.

Methinks that letter will bring more freedom to china than the nobel price.

You're probably correct if we just look at the facts. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to presume, though, that the letter is a political response by the party trying to keep balance, possibly a response to the very incident being discussed in this thread.

Just a quick comment starseeker. What ethnicity are you? And if you are chinese are you a nationlist taiwanese chinese?

Haha, it's curious that you call that "ethnicity". Isn't that more, like, political views?

Maybe ethnicity ids the wrong word. But I don't think politics is correct either. Maybe which chinese he/she is?

The reason I ask is you can always depend on starseeker to target the ccp at every opportunity. Its as if he has been wronged personally and is on a personal crusade to make sure every negative thing the CCP does is aired.

Kinda like a while back we got non-stop posts about how folks from a certain eastern european country would do stupid things like castrating oneself because the said farmer confused his pecker for a chickens neck.
