Frankencomp!

Since I acquired a few, almost not used cases, I decided to move my 'secondary' PC into one, abandoning the old PC case that served as a vessel for my frankencomp, a PC put together as I gradually upgraded my main machine.

Frankencomp worked perfectly, its loins free of games and bloatware, running its 3,2Ghz P4 happily and hardly making any noise, before I decided to transplant him into a new 'body'.

So, being not that much of a newbie in putting pc's together, I assembled him into a new case. Everything was in place, doublechecked all connections, plugged the power supply into the contact, made sure the green LED in my P5ND mobo was on, indicating that it was functional, and pressed the ON switch.

Nothing.

Tried again.

Nothing.

Pulled the power off, checked the pwr switch and reset connections, and tried again. Still nothing.

Tried a few other, different combinations, and still. Nothing. The computer didn't start.

So, I thought either the pwrswitch button or wiring is fucked. No big deal, as I had an identical case next to it, and promptly replaced the whole front panel with a similar one. Rechecked I had plugged the power connections in properly, pressed the ON switch again.

Nothing.

Goddammit. I pulled off the front panel off my old case, disconnected all wires from the 'new' front panel, and plugged the old case switches in, thrilled by my resourcefulness and absolute 'genious'.

Nothing.

Ah-ha, so the problem wasn't the switch, now, was it? Unplugged everything, plugged everything back in, and gave it a go.

Nothing.

Not even a power up and a wail from the PC Speaker, telling me I fucked up something in its entrails.

It's really strange. The power LED on the mobo is green, indicating it's good to go, and all the power supply cables are on, including the one to my GPU. I have no idea what the fuck is going on, and why this computer doesn't want to come back to life. So, anybody fancy a guess?

Here's a picture:

- double check that no metal from the mobo is touching the mobo tray.
- check for overtightened mobo screws (insert washers where necessary).
- triple check that the power button wires are in place correctly and no swapped.
- unplug everything (i mean, everything... get the memory out, the gfx card, the pci cards, unplug the HDDs,...) and try like that.
- check jumpers (or lack thereof)

What size PSU do you have?
about 150 mm x 140 mm x 85 mm by the looks of it on the pic?

Standard crappy 350W ATX PSU. Worked fine, don't have any heavy duty gear plugged in.

Washers might be a problem, don't think I got enough of 'em. Will try in a sec.

they're usually not even necessary unless you overtightened it.

it's odd, but you can easily kill a mobo by overtightening screws. still, i doubt this is the case here.

LED would be red, seen the exact same mobo dead on a friends' rig.

*checks*

Hey, there's a cable missing from my 'MAIN' ATX connector. The square and peg plastic thing is missing a cable with the metal jacket.

EDIT:

Got it working. Either something reversed the standard jumper configuration, the instructions were printed backwards, or I simply misunderstood them.

not sure if that's what you mean, but one of the cables in the ATX 20 or 24 pin mobo connectors is optional. quite often, it's just left empty as it doesn't really serve a purpose.

also congratz on getting it working again. :)

Everything fine and dandy. Frankencomp is alive and kickin'!

Now... to my darkest project... reviving the OLDEST PC ever, with parts from 1999, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth.

This one will have to wait until I find an HDD to put win 2000 on it.

Wooz. You need to upgrade to a shiny new PC.

I have many PC's, man. My main rig is 4GB/9800GT. You can buy me a 280 if you wish.

I also have a half-dead laptop Silencer gave me as a present somewhere, back when I was struggling with an idiotic interweb connection this summer. I hoped to find pics of his wife nekkid, but no luck...

Ah, and I set up a printer on my home network yesterday. I fucking rule.

Good lord. 1999? Are you mad?

How about this. Trying to get PHP+IIS 7+Mysql to play nice together. Using FastCGI.

I thought my brain was going to explode.

I would love to have my p3/128mb/Matrox Millenium 32mb/13 GB Quantom HDD back. :(
I could play some sweet old games with it without a fuss.

I still have a 33 MHz 386 with 4MB RAM lying around at my Dad's place. Oddly enough, it still works, other than the fact that it keeps "forgetting" about its hard drive due to a depleted CMOS battery. It has a shitload of ancient DOS games installed, though true gems are the crappy Daggerfall, Syndicate and C&C fanfic shorts I wrote when I was twelve.
