Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports the return of tactical turn-based combat, in the form of Jagged Alliance Online, a browser-based MMO.

Jagged Alliance Online will be built around the familiar Jagged Alliance games mechanics, which are a mixture of turn-based battles and real-time action. The player takes control of a group of soldiers, commanding them from an isometric perspective to complete tasks in order to earn cash as well as renown. If a player wants to stay on top, mercenaries will need to be trained and equipped with better weapons. If that’s not quite enough, then mercenaries can be borrowed from friends or alliances can be formed with other players.

Here's the feature list:

* Tactical Turn based Action in 3D isometric graphics with parameterized maps for fresh challenges
* Management of mercenary company with extended RPG system
* Synchronous and asynchronous online PvE, co-op and PvP
* Build up your own HQ
* Players can choose to accept campaigns, which are essentially a string of missions on a specific map that need to be resolved within a given time frame.
* Players can support other’s campaigns by renting mercenaries for a certain amount of time and can also bolster their roster by using their ally’s mercs.
* The game can be played as a normal browser game, managing mercenaries and sending them on missions or players can dive into the action on the tactical map, improving their chances and rewards.
* The game has three core layers of gameplay:
o The tactical map, where players control their mercs directly in turn based/real time combat.
o The management level, where players run their company, rent out mercs and choose missions or campaigns as well as build up their HQ facilities.
o The social layer, where players may support or fight others on campaigns or missions.

*Argh*

I'm just waiting for World of Starcraft, Deus Ex Online and Age of Empires onli- oh wait, that one IS coming.

Oh my :(

I really used to like the Jagged Alliance games. Don't know the company bitComposer Games (developer) well enough to start slagging it off, but the idea of JA in Java/browser-based MMO style kinda scares me.

Now they also announced a remake of JA2. It will be in 3d and get's a tutorial on the beginning. More information I couldn't find yet.

So... I'd say it also can never become better than ja2 1.13, except if they add some kind of support for that, what I somehow doubt.

Here's the announcement Lexx was talking about:
Eschborn, August 20, 2010: Jagged Alliance 2 - Reloaded will be released next year, and this multi award-winning classic will appear as a totally revamped version. German publisher bitComposer Games is currently developing a remake of Jagged Alliance 2, which will retain the tried-and-trusted game principle, but will have a totally new game look and which will address the weak points of the original. Jagged Alliance 2 - ReloadedReloaded will therefore have a contemporary 3D graphic syle in an isometric view, the user interface will be totally redesigned and an extensive tutorial will ease the player into the complex game rules system. Find out more about Jagged Alliance 2 - Reloaded and about other titles in the Jagged Alliance universe on the new product website www.jaggedalliance.com.

The Jagged Alliance series has won numerous national and international accolades since the first title was published in 1994. The second part in particular, Jagged Alliance 2, released in 1999, received numerous awards and high ratings from the games media worldwide. Jagged Alliance 2 - Reloaded takes the tried-and-trusted game principle and builds on and improves it. The new game will retain the popular combo of a turn-based strategy game with roleplay elements.

Also, some screenshots of the current build of this very game! (spotted this over at www.Ja-galaxy-forum.com) Those Germans work quick!

The new look-and-feel is a great fit! I think it'll be better than any of the predecessors' games would have been. Now, the next question is: how does it play? :boy:

EDIT: fixed those images

Yeah! I'm much more excited about Jagged Alliance - Reloaded. Let's just hope they a) actually finish it and b) don't alter the gameplay too much (some new things in 1.13 were IMO already a bit much).

I love 1.13. Can't play the game without it. The only thing thats bad about 1.13 is the balance. As soon as you get rifles with some basic addons, the game becomes just too easy. Still.. without 1.13, I will never ever play the game again.

For sure - I love what it does to AI (they actually flank you, climb up and down buildings etc.)

I really didn't like the new ugly-ass inventory system, the huge amount of new items (all of which suck - like the uniforms, holsters etc.)

But it is fully editable, which is amazing. I'm so glad the developers put everything into external files, which you can edit yourself. Spent a few hours modifying all the variables, and in the end I had a wicked play-through of JA2.

I personally like the new inventory. You can store more items and it looks cooler. But I can understand that not everyone likes it, because it also adds a higher amount of micro-management to the game. Still, this shouldn't be a big problem, because the last time I checked, the inventory was optional and could be disabled. ;)

I agree that items like the uniforms are somewhat useless. Don't know why they are in the game.

I tried the Beta. Not bad. It's good. But if you want to play it with health packs and bought mercs, it's way too expensive.

If you want to buy a mercenary, it costs you like 15 dollars. If you want a full team, it's 45 dollars. (You get 1 for free.) 1 health pack is $3. Who the hell is going to spend hundreds of dollars on this game?

The game looks ok, the characters are alright.

But there are many annoying things, like you don't see who is active, you accidentally using up their action points, sometimes you can't see the map because the trees. The guns used up really fast. You can fix them with parts and gun oil. There is a problem, a new used gun is $500, the gun oil is $1,500. Duct tape $2,400. You can buy gum too you can TRY to repair your guns with it. $400 chewing gum. And yes, TRY, because even when you pay, these things works only like 70% of the time. 30% is just wasted money.

You can buy pillow and defibrilator. You can use those ONCE. You buy a pillow, and it disappears.

You can't buy first aid kit or medkit with game money. You can buy those only with real money. The funny thing is, it's really easy to use them accidentally too. You just click on it and it disappears, even if the soldier is not injured.

200 rounds of good ammo is 5 dollars (real money).

An M1 helmet is 6 real dollars. The armour too. Guns are like 4-5 dollars.

Oh, and if you buy those, you use them up really soon. 1-2 battles and those things are useless.

I played 3 days, but I didn't see any NPC-s. You go somewhere, you fight, then back to the base. I like it, but meh...

another MMO the world does not need. splendit.

I am so glad that this kickstarter thing exists. The more power to indy people the better.

I have read about this JA MMO already a few weeks ago. And it already back then was completely uninteresting. From my experience with those "free to play games" is that if you are not ready to throw down a huge chunk of money then you will not achieve much. Or at leats you will reach a point where you are literally forced to spend money - See world of tanks.

There are concepts which work as f2p, and there are concepts which do not. JA was always singleplayer. It will be always singleplayer. Why should every game be the same ? I mean would Fallout work as shooter and in first person where dialogues are ignored ? I mean ... wait a min.

I'm speechless. Why anyone would want to throw money away on something this dumb is beyond me.

Merc business is harsh business. :)

Sounds really stupid. Wonder how many people will waste hundreds of dollars on it.

Back In Action is pretty good, but wait for the patches that are coming. They will add the much needed sector inventory, and fog of war. Without sector inventory you will spend 3/4 of the time muleing your mercs. Without FOW the game is really cheap and displays glaring issues with the opponent AI which might not be so prevalant with FOW. Also, the game already has mod tools released, so people are making mods. This is a good sign. 1.13 had to start somewhere...
The JA:BIA forums have active developers listening to feedback and taking suggestions and have stated that 2 major free updates are on the way which add the above features, some other unannounced shit, and fix bugs.

As for the JA:MMO. I'm embarrassed for the asshole who thinks that business model will ever be successful. I bet most money they end up making (recouping?) will come from some kid who stole their parent's credit card.

The moment I gain absolute power, all those that raped the Jagged Alliance franchise will be the first to be put against the wall and shot.
