OK, so I've been ignoring the game for a while, but now after I'm almost done with multiple replays of FONV, I'm looking for something else to play. There's the recent Divinity 2 expansion, but it probably won't last long.

So, I'd love to hear some opinions about the game. I remember playing NWN1 when it came out and getting bored with the original campaign not too far into it. Then Shadows of Undertide came along with great writing and fun gameplay, which I absolutely loved. Hordes of Underdark was simply a fun hack'n'slash fest as an extension of SoU but the story was kind of unremarkable.

Now', I've tried to get into NWN2 on release. I finished the prologue but stopped playing soon after. The story didn't seem to great, and the unwieldy camera kept freaking me out. I also never managed to figure out how the crafting system works which was detrimental to my crafting-oriented character.

I know there have been multiple addons and improvements to the game, so I am wondering whether you people think it's worth a shot. Also, should I try to revisit the original campaign, or jump straight into the addons? Are the stories connected?

I played only the original NWN2, and remember I had a great time. But yes, crafting was highly useless in the original. Maybe the add-ons change that, dunno.

Either way, I had a lot more fun with NWN2 than Dragon Age (which was a flop, IMO).

Main thing i remember about it is the absolutely infuriating camera.

Admittedly it was a few years back and my memory of it is a bit faint, but christ almighty.

MotB is the bomb. While I didn't have as much of a problem with NWN 2 as some other people did the story was kinda meh but MotB kicked it up to eleven with a pretty nifty story and some interesting mechanics.
Storm of Zephyr and Mysteries of Westagate are good as well.

Camera still sucks though but no helping that.

NWN 2 original campaign was fun, although heavily-cliched and often simply childish. MotB is a lot better in terms of characters, story and world design. Gameplay may be a bitch, because of the crave-o-meter (which always discouraged me from playing a soul-devouring asshole, since it's way too bothersome to keep it filled at high craving levels) and the fact that most battles look like Star Wars due to high level spells.

Well, it's generally difficult/impossible to play a meaningful evil character in most cRPGs anyway.

Thanks for the opinions, one clarification though: MoTB is pretty much high-level content, right? And then Zehir starts with level1?

Also, if anyone found good ways to cope w/ the camera or knows good fan-patches to fix it, suggestions are very, very welcome.

Finally someone who agrees with me on that. It's a overhyped steaming pile of donkeypoo. I loved it at first but then realized that it offers no replay value, is basically a Witcher rip-off and it has an ugly artstyle.

That said, Neverwinter Nights 2 had a great campaign with the possibility to play an evil character believably. That was always rare in RPGs. There are also tons of Persistent World Servers for great Roleplayexperience - for german players i can recommend the HOCHWALDALLIANZ. Some D&D/Forgotten Realms Knowledge is needed though.

I mentioned this in another thread, but you should try the multi-player. Specifically, here:

It's a hardcore RP server, you might enjoy it. They enforce roleplay, have modded for third (or maybe fourth now) edition DnD rules. Regular DM involvement and events. Very slow experience gain, not a place where you go out in the wilderness and grind up levels (if you die, it is also permanent). They've had a strong community going for years now.

    The only problem ?
    DnD sucks.
    It's the p'n'p equivalent of a MMORPG.
And NWN2 is the low-scale equivalent of a MMORPG as well.
Open Door, kill monster, loot, level-up.
Except the players feel hardcore because it's not mainstream.

Or go on a "RP" server, which basically means, make up boring stories to compensate the boring gameplay.
There's a reason the only interesting RolePlay on the net happens in Play By E-Mail games. If you're going to let the players invent the story, you need to give them time.

The only potential of the game ? Finding a solo mod with a great plot. But you need a good writer for that. It's not really common...

I think NWN2's main campaign is pretty decent for what it is: a pretty linear, action-heavy rpg with a handful of choices that don't have any real consequences. if you're into clichéd fantasy settings, this one handles it really well. the story is pretty good with a few twists and turns and voice-acting is alright. some of the characters are pretty interesting, while others are more than annoying. they all have personality though. the best part of the game is the character creation system. if you're into the newer DnD rules, that is. there's a lot of room for experimentation and the system alone gives you a reason to play the game more than once.

all-in-all I think it was miles ahead of Dragon Age. not as many long and dull dungeon crawls and a much better character system.

I kid you not, NWN2 is LITERALLY the worst RPG I have EVER played. I could write an essay on it, but this single example should suffice:

[spoiler:756fed1d8f]You are given a scenario hwerein you are accused of a crime, and you can gather evidence, and use skill to talk and prove your innocence. Gathering all the evidence could take you a good few hours, so as such, one would except a court victory and subsequent imprisonment of the flase party who is the true guilty one, right? No. If you spent time working hard to win the court case, the prosecution invokes 'The right of some bullshit' and forces you into a 1v1 fight. What? This is a law in NeverWinter??? That any fucking court case is solved with fucking fights to the fucking death!!!!! If you loose the court case, your companion challenges the prosecution to the battle. Really? How arbitrey does that make the whole scenario then? Win, loose, put effort in or dont, all leads to the same fucking result! Ugh, what, so some warrior who rapes and murders old women, could say, challenge the prosecution to a fight to the death everytime he's arrested? Really?[/spoiler:756fed1d8f]

Apolagies for the language/and or outburst. I hate the game. So much.

Neverwinter Nights 2 has not much to do with Neverwinter Nights 1, it was developed by Obsidian while the first one was developed by Bioware, and they didn't manage to deliver a decent campaign until the second expansion.

    @Black Feather

Shaddup, I liked Elanee :( Qara was the annoying one.

Anyway, I played through the main campaign and really enjoyed it overall. I don't get where all the hate on the story comes from, it does pretty well overall for a linear h'n's game, and the NWN2 OC is certainly way better than NWN1 OC which was so boring that I never finished it. Was nothing original though, they pretty much took the best from NWN1 HoTU and Kingmaker module and put it together.

The game pretty much collapsed halfway through third act though, where they didn't even bother to build full-blown locations for Reaver encounters and just used RE maps, the battle was a joke, and the difficulty spike in the final dungeon is ridiculous. I don't mind extra challenge, but the game really shouldn't suddenly go from you 1-hit killing everything to everything 1-hit killing you. And the ending was a really really crappy cliffhanger for the sequel, even worse than Divinity2's ending.

So, playing through MoTB now, kind of like the characters (except that it seems like no effort was put it to make them look anything like their portraits). Seems like they fixed many technical flaws that were bugging me - like the silly rest system. The story thus far is on par with OC, although more "exotic" for me since I don't think I've played a cRPG set in Rashemen yet. The Spirit hunger system sounds like a cool idea, but from what I've seen, doesn't really work well. You go to a long dungeon where there's no spirits to eat, and that's it, you're pretty much screwed. I've also had my character refuse to use the "devour" ability multiple times with no explanation from the engine.

There was no third expansion  The "premium modules" don't count. IMO also, SoUT was a great campaign, if a tad short.
