OXM podcast to feature Pete Hines interview

Starwars

Mildly Dipped
We caught this one just a bit too late, as OXM was gathering questions for an interview via Twitter fours hours ago, and stopped an hour ago.
Thanks for the questions all! Answers to follow in podcast form once the mag's on sale. Assuming we've got the iTunes feed sorted by then.
The interview is with Pete Hines and not with one of Obsidian's developers. This should come as no shock since that's how Bethesda does PR, but let's be honest, that promises a long rote of significantly uninteresting interviews coming up for this game.

This reminds me of how Vince D. Weller called Pete Hines in his Fallout 3 review: a used car salesman

He'll only show off more of his ignorance during the interviews.

It's not ignorance. Pete Hines just has a job and he's good at it. Not telling us anything we want to know, but saying enough of the standard, meaningless filler lines to get a lot of people excited.

It's pointless if you're looking for information, it's fine from a PR standpoint.

The dude he's so good, I bet when he goes on a date, the girl (or boy!!!) falls for him right there and then. I bet if he's married, his wife must be Gemma Atkinson. Or if he swings the other way, Ashton Kutcher.

Though knowing what he says, it's probably Margaret Tatcher. Or Hitler!

Hmmm... You're right BN. Maybe ignorance wasn't the right word. Reading your Q&A with him certainly revealed how much this guy finds the way to develop an answer that might suffice, even when he's lying. Just like Vince called him, a used car salesman

He is goot at what he does, but it sucks that we don't give a shit about that : ). If only they would get Sawyer or Avellone..

I bet he is going to end up saying something about how they limited creative development/change with New Vegas so Obsidian wouldn't alienate the Fallout 3 fan base or confuse them (although in less direct terms)

I hope not. Let Obsidian make their own game... Please!!

Well if there is something Bethesda/Zenimax know how to do, its Marketing. That is exactly where they deserve awards. Not for games.

That's the thing about Pete Hines; he's not afraid to endlessly rehash rote answers in interviews. That's one of the things I most admire about him.

Don't reply if you don't get the reference, lulz

They get a lot of "help" from the gaming press that for sure. But I still think its somewhat remarkable how Bethesda and its "marketing" chiefs manage to manipulate them in their favour. Not that other companies like either EA, Bioware, Blizzard etc. would not "play" with the press particularly now as Bioware is part of EA it seems comercials have increased by Bioware, or to be more specific the way how they promote their games, DLCs, forcing Accounts (like I dont have enough of them anyway, with Steam, emails and so on ...) etc. all things that I dont remember really from a company like Bioware and which I dont see as very costumer friendly. DLCs are in my eyes one of the worst invention in the history of PC gaming and anothe way of milking the player I would not surprise me if a few companies leave parts of the game out during development cause they simply want to sell it later to the players.

But its kinda as said remarkable what Bethesda is doing, I mean sometimes I have the feeling they could use a shovel to fill-up earth with worms in a glass bottle and sell it to their fans and the press would prise it as innovative and "new" approach. Its particularly interesting when you compare VDs review of Oblivion with those from the public gaming press, or simply the video about the Radiant AI with reality ... I mean seriously many of their Games and DLCs have so many bugs that you can call it almost broken. Yet it are seen as the best of the best RPGs.

It mostly only works with their own games, though. I didn't see much praise for Rogue Warrior.

It is quite cool that they sell shitloads of copies of every on of their games though. Clearly Hines is a pro at what he does.

ORLY?

IHRA Drag Racing, Pirates of the Caribbean, AMF Bowling, Rogue Warrior, Wheelspin, Star Trek: Conquest, Star Trek: Tactical Assault, Star Trek Encounters, Star Trek Legacy, Powerdrome... All games developed and/or published by Bethesda. All very poor in terms of sales, and most are excruciatingly bad...

And I hear WET is also very bad.

Which is forgivable for a game with a name like that.

They probably didn't make much money for themselves with stuff like Legacy and Wheelspin. Probably amongst the worst games ever, without exaggerating.

I meant games developed by Bethesda. Those are the ones they spend their marketing budget on.

Wet is slightly above average.

Well most of those games havnt been directly made by Bethesda I think.

But even with games they did not developed by themself they still had some huge effect particiularly the Star Trek games which they fucked up badly in the process. If someome is thinking the Fallout community got raped by Beth with the sequel, well they never seen the butt of the Treky fans ...
