Download Dak's version of Redviewer
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19771 it has sprite editing capabilities and you'll never need to look at another raw file again.
I have this exact same problem (read the tutorial JJ86 and followed it exactly, but imported by spray 1.1 the raw files are deformed beyond recognition), with the added bonus that Daks version of Redviewer (RedView49_3_1) dosent work on my machine.
I get an error saying:
Run-time error 713:
Class not registered.
You need the following file to be installed on your machine.MSSTDFMT.DLL.
I tried downloading in unzipping the .DLL into the right folder (system) in windows, but still no change. I read one of the .txt files that came with RedView49_3_1 called RedViewHistory.txt and it said in case of a .DLL missing error, I should download and install redviewer.msi and that should fix it.
I tried that, but still no change. I then went on to downloading and installing (well, only 1 or 2 of them needed installing, most of them are good to go after unzipping) and they all work, exept the RedView49_3_1. I have redview1_6_17, redviewer ace and a few others.
Also, in JJ86s "Creating A New Weapon Sprite"
(
http://jj86tutorials.stgfc.com/creating_weapon_sprite.htm ), he writes that the raw files most be resized to the following to work properly:
Gun
guismall-42x27
guibig-84x52
default-18x9
those are the size in pixels right? if yes, then the raws end up being much smaller (about 50%) than the existing weapon sprites, are they supposed to?
the raw I make for the "guibig" at 84x52
is about the size of the "guismall" sprite in spray 1.1
another thing I was wondering is, I dont seem to be able to open the ammo sprites with spray, only with redviewer. Can I alter them in redviewer somehow? Sorry, I found no tutorial on how to make ammo sprites.
EDIT: I just discovered that I cant even import *.raw files that Ive exported using Spray 1.1. I have downloaded the great sprite packs from
http://jj86tutorials.stgfc.com/ and Im trying to change a few things around in those sprites.
for example there is a M4 sprite, but it replaces the TommyGun, I want it to replace the Steyr Aug, so I loaded the M4 sprite (TommyGun) and chose "export", then I get to save the guibig (and the other 2 as well) as a *.raw.
I do this, but then when I opened the Steyr Aug and the try to import the *.raw, my guibig becomes just a series of deformed lines. What am I doing wrong?
Sorry Im very new to all of this modding bussines, but I find learning about it is great fun, specially when you get some results.
Spent last night trying to figure out photoshop.
