Raw Files not working.

Freak

First time out of the vault
Hi,

I've been a fallout fanatic since the first hour and after a long time I've finally got used to FoT. Now I'm obsessed with creating my own set of H&K weapons, but all my raw pics (created with adobe cs2) are totally screwed up, because the program isn't able to save them properly.

I've read the tutorial JJ86 and tried all kinds of settings, but loaded by spray or cs2 the raw files are deformed beyond recognition. It seems like nobody has the same problem.

By the way - is the community still alive?

Great, it's working!

The Images are surrounded by white lines, but I guess I will be able to hande that soon.

Thank you very much!!!

Were you using BMP's in 256 color. If you started with PNG's just convert them over to BMP's in 256 color and follow the tutorials that explain how to create ZAR's and Sprites. They can be accsessed from the Help Menu.

Download Dak's version of Redviewer http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19771 it has sprite editing capabilities and you'll never need to look at another raw file again.

I have this exact same problem (read the tutorial JJ86 and followed it exactly, but imported by spray 1.1 the raw files are deformed beyond recognition), with the added bonus that Daks version of Redviewer (RedView49_3_1) dosent work on my machine. :(

I get an error saying:

Run-time error 713:

Class not registered.
You need the following file to be installed on your machine.MSSTDFMT.DLL.

I tried downloading in unzipping the .DLL into the right folder (system) in windows, but still no change. I read one of the .txt files that came with RedView49_3_1 called RedViewHistory.txt and it said in case of a .DLL missing error, I should download and install redviewer.msi and that should fix it.

I tried that, but still no change. I then went on to downloading and installing (well, only 1 or 2 of them needed installing, most of them are good to go after unzipping) and they all work, exept the RedView49_3_1. I have redview1_6_17, redviewer ace and a few others.

Also, in JJ86s "Creating A New Weapon Sprite"
( http://jj86tutorials.stgfc.com/creating_weapon_sprite.htm ), he writes that the raw files most be resized to the following to work properly:

Gun

guismall-42x27

guibig-84x52

default-18x9

those are the size in pixels right? if yes, then the raws end up being much smaller (about 50%) than the existing weapon sprites, are they supposed to?

the raw I make for the "guibig" at 84x52
is about the size of the "guismall" sprite in spray 1.1 :?

another thing I was wondering is, I dont seem to be able to open the ammo sprites with spray, only with redviewer. Can I alter them in redviewer somehow? Sorry, I found no tutorial on how to make ammo sprites.

EDIT: I just discovered that I cant even import *.raw files that Ive exported using Spray 1.1. I have downloaded the great sprite packs from http://jj86tutorials.stgfc.com/ and Im trying to change a few things around in those sprites.

for example there is a M4 sprite, but it replaces the TommyGun, I want it to replace the Steyr Aug, so I loaded the M4 sprite (TommyGun) and chose "export", then I get to save the guibig (and the other 2 as well) as a *.raw.

I do this, but then when I opened the Steyr Aug and the try to import the *.raw, my guibig becomes just a series of deformed lines. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry Im very new to all of this modding bussines, but I find learning about it is great fun, specially when you get some results.
Spent last night trying to figure out photoshop.

You'll have to wait to Dak or even maybe Red comes along about installing the viewer.

But when you are creating and importing the raw files into spray are you also creating and importing the palette as well? Raw files do look messed up in spray until the correct palette file is imported and until you've entered the right measurements on the right under the preview pic.

I'm not sure what you mean by it replaces the tommygun, do you mean the ground sprite? Well sometimes editing somebody else's custom work is a bit dodgy, they might object for one thing. :P

Seriously though again are you exporting and importing the palette file as well? And again it will look messed up until you've done so and also entered the correct dimensions. Open up the M4 sprite and note down the info in the boxes under the image. Then open up the Steyr import the raw and act files and then enter the data.

Finally have you got the right version of photoshop not all versions (mainly the more recent) are able to create the raw and act files that Spray needs.

Ah, the palette thing must be where I screwed up, sounds like I need to read another tutorial or 12 ( on spray 1.1 to find out what a palette is to begin with). Ill try your instruction, thank you.

Once I figure that out, all I need is like 3-4 new weapons sprites tops, and Ill make a [request] thread and see if some friendly soul will come along and make them for me.

And yes I followed JJ86s direction in his article to a point, and it worked, or it seemed to but the *.raws that came out were awefully small. Im using Photoshop 9 and everything worked fine.

BTW, Im making this mod for myself, when its done, If someone wants to try it, Id be happy to upload it, but I dont see too many people doing that.

But if that happens, of course Ill give the people that made the sprites and the portrait .zars Im using the credit that they deserve. :)

The palette file is the act file. In the tutorial it explains about making the act.

When you open up the sprite in Spray look to where the option to export/import the image is. Next to it is the option to import/export the palette (act).

JJ's sizes are only a guide it's best to open a similar sprite, i.e. a rifle for a rifle or a revolver for a revolver and look at the dimensions to work out the sizes.

Thank you T-Bolt, Ill try that. :)

EDIT: That did it!! It worked!! HAHAHA! :D
Freaking cool! I was seriously about to flip out there for a while, very frustrated.

Youre the man, man!
Thanks again for taking the time to explain things to me. :D
