Unofficial Fan Made Fallout?

DarkUnderlord

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
With the advent of the Fallout 1 & 2 level editor, what's the possibility of making a completely Unofficial, Fan-Made Fallout? Either an Unofficial Fallout 3 or some other appropriate story line. Essentially, one big happy Fallout mod? Is anyone (other than me) interested on embarking on such an ambitious project as this? Perhaps as a follow on from that Private Forum about a Fan Made game that crashed a while ago?

As far as I know, the only things we need are:
1) Fallout Level Editor (In the works)
2) Fallout Dialogue Editor (Not too sure about this one, is there one? Or is there another way around it?)
3) Fallout Items & Weapons Editor (I think hex editing is the current method? Or programs are available already.)
4) Fallout Graphics/Art Editor (Not *really* necessary, mainly because we could get away with a simple solid storyline, most Fallout Fans I know don't want to be drooling over graphics, they want to drool over the storyline possibilities and freedom in the game world. Although, one or two 'extra' things might be needed, like some new 50s era artwork that we could add in.)

I suppose I'm asking two things. 1, is anyone else interested? and 2, Are the tools available? If not, can we make them, or work around them?

I've been waiting for the map editor, and hope something along a speech editor or the like could be possible at some point...

If so, sounds very good.

Great idea, but why modding fo1/2? Would't it be possible to modify FOT for this purpose? We would then have better graphics, not only because of the higher resolution.

Anyways, if there would be a well organized, real approach on doing such a great modification, i would participate in any way possible.

even though there really isnt anything i can do to help on the project, i'd be willing to help out where needed. with the right resources we could EASILY make this better then FO1/2.

NMA - by gamers for gamers

Ewww.... How could you mention FOT? Yuck.... Personally, I'd prefer modding FO1/2 to FOT. Mainly because I hated FOT :) However, if it's possible to mod FOT to the point that people play it without realsing that it's some kind of Tactics Combat crap.... Perhaps. We'd also need to implement dialogue trees and various other game things so that we can make quests. I can't really see that happening with FOT. I don't believe the FOT engine can do the kind of things needed. It might be quite a bit more hacking work on our part to get something like this made in FOT.

Yes. It would have to be very organised. Also keep in mind that it would take a long time to do. Somewhere in the vicinity of 1-2 years, depending on how far we want to go with it.

I'm in much the same position. I'm essentially relying on the ability of the editors that are (with any luck) coming out for FO1/2.

> I've been waiting for the map editor, and hope something along

At this stage, it's looking like we'll have a good (at least usable anyway) map editor. I'm not too sure about any dialogue or speech editors that might be around. We might have to see if anyone is willing to make these sorts of tools for us.

>Interplay - by corporations for profit
>
>NMA - by gamers for gamers

Amen to that! :)

At this stage though, the editors look like they'll be some time away. That should give us plenty of time to start nutting out a basic storyline and what we want/need to make this all work. We'd have to work out not only what we want to do, but also what we CAN do. There might be problems in actually editing FO1/2 in terms of making quests and other things. Problems that we will need to find ways to solve, otherwise the whole project could fail.

However, the other way to approach this is to simply make a start on it. Work out a storyline and plot, time setting, various groups/factions in the world etc... If worst comes to worst and we can't actually do what we want, we may end up with just a good fan-fiction story :)

Anyway, Rosh, what's the possibility of getting a seperate private forum set up for this? We might be able to make a tentative start and pull more people in as necessary.

[link:www.nma-fallout.com/fallout1/walk/tim_cain_chris_taylor.shtml|Helpful Fallout Reminders] I'm thinking of a time somewhere in between FO1 and FO2. It lets us fill in some gaps and avoid any problems with a real FO3 (if BIS make one). Anyway, I'd like a private forum to nut this all out. Rosh?

Ok, forget what i said about FOT, i started playing it yesterday, and in the beginning it looked like fo1/2 engine with better graphics, i have now completed the 6th mission or so, and i realized that the FOT engine is not usable for a FO-RPG.

Not because of the tactical combat stuff, but the speech is very limited, and the right-click menu we know from fo1/2 is not present anymore.

On the other side, i really like the direct control of the whole party, and the vehicles are funny too. =)

Um, right-click actually cancels the present command. The pop-up menu occurs when you press and hold the left mouse button.

yaya, sorry, it's been over a year that i played fo1/2, but you know what i mean. =P

hey id love to be involved in such a project , i'm not much for programming or mod, ding but ive finished FO1/2 several times under different style characters, i would love to help with mission/ex gaining tasks , i can create concept art , and anything else which would help in developement , just as long as the FOT engine isnt used , boy did it stink .... anyways thanks hopefully this will go ahead

now that the mapper is out (sorta right) some people should get started on this project or is it already scrapped? lets get a move on eh? =]

Oh no zuger.... It's still alive. As long as I'm around, it'll be around (this is a pet thing for me. I've wanted to do it for a while... :) )

At the moment, I'm waiting on a private forum being setup so that I can gather everyone into one central place to work on the storyline/setting and everything else that needs to be done, before we atually start creating the maps and so on. Mucking around with the editors would be a good idea though. To find out what we can and can't do.

Once I get the forum up (they're having problems actually making it visible and giving people access) then I'll probably get everyone to email me. Hopefully, the forum will be setup within the next week. So, by the 12th April. If not, then I've got problems... :(

I offer any services I may be able to provide. Of course spending the last two years hanging around the fan fiction and RPG boards must have taught me something so I would mainly be helping out with story.

The Annunaki, one of the fan fic writings guilds around recently started a project like this, only they were just drafting out the story itself rather than actually making it into a game. Nonetheless, they did jot down some good ideas before the Annunaki sadly dwindled to the point I had last post on nearly ever forum I have access to. The following is a link to what few ideas they did have, explore them if you will.

so just for clarification we're not doing it here at nma?
btw - vault13's forums are closed right now due to "backing up" or something.

No, we're not doing it at NMA *cough* *cough* Rosh was *cough* slack *cough* :) Vault13 is just as fine. And I know about the backup. Unfortunately, the site host decided to shut down right when I got my forum :( Anyway..... Given a week, we SHOULD get somewhere. Either that or I'll shoot myself. With a Bozar. In the head. Between the eyes even.

Before you say anymore I'd recommend checking out some of the FOT single-player mission maps created by Max-V, Endocore, and others to see what is possible with a little creativity. The speech trees you know and love from Fallout are not possible but with scripting triggers you can make something very similar. And if the modders tried to hack that engine, anything could be possible. The tools that already exist for FOT allow for an incredible amount of customization.

And there are currently many maps in the works that are pushing the boundaries of FOT more than what Microforte ever tried.

Eww.... You want me to play FOT again? Yuck.... Not on your life. I still haven't finished that god-forsaken game... :)

Okay, seriously though, if it IS possible to make an RPG like Fallout 1 IN FOT, then it's certainly something I'd be open to. If we find it too hard to edit FO1/2 then FOT is obviously the next choice. However, if I can't get dialogue trees, I won't be a happy chappy. At this point though, I personally would prefer FO1/2 over FOT but again, this is because of my personal hate for eveything that FOT is. :) It has nothing to do with FOTs engine or graphics.

I wouldn't suggest using the FOT editors if you either have a life or don't want to die of old age. Those are some of the most cumbersome tools I've seen in a long time.

Fo1/Fo2 has a lot more possibility in being modded for a new game than FOT. Seriously, with FOT, you'd have to do a shitload of changing things so they aren't broken and so that it works like a Fallout game should.

Fallout 1 and 2 do work on most computers, as compared to the crash-happy binary turd of FOT. Those interested in a fan-made Fallout would likely have Fo1&Fo2, as quite a few I know didn't bother to buy a game that didn't have sufficient development time and was patched to a half-ass state.

Am I going to work on something that works like ass and would require a MAJOR overhaul to BEGIN to approach Fallout? Think about it. Using the FOT engine would require a lot more work or sleazy bypasses as opposed to those developing editors or making an entirely new game engine.

At this time, I unfortunately cannot help DU with this, as we're first waiting for V13's boards to come back up for his forum, and I'm also in development of a couple new MUD codebased that promises to both help throw off the old cliche'd fantasy schtick, and to also recreate it. An area-style MUD codebase as well. I can help in an advisory/minor implementation role, but not much else at this time.

The major PROBLEM I see with any of this is Interplay acting like major pricks, which they are wont to do.

Anyone else remember "Heroes of Fallout", and how they squashed that?
