Last night, a rather interesting show, called "What the world thinks of god" was aired on BBC 2. It featured a lot of extremely interesting polls(that actually agree with the atheist/agnost poll a few topics down here), and a lot of interesting debate.
Polls are here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/wtwtgod/3518375.stm
Programme is here:

Read it, it's really interesting and enlightening. It showed how people thought of god and religion.

For me, it let me draw the conclusion that the Islam is not a violent religion, mainly due to the fact that, apparently, the majority of muslims despise the terrorist attacks done in the name of Allah.

Didn't we see this elsewhere- that the Western European countries are generally more secular?

Sander, second link isn't working.

In Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage, there is a section where a young English fellow traveling in Germany renounces his faith primarily because it's a fashionable thing to do. Yet, in another of his books, The Razor's Edge, it is the matter of faith and man's relationship to faith that is part of his drive for identity, understanding and justification. I know people here that are "anti-church" and perhaps "anti-religion" without really understanding it, partlially out of fashion. But at the same time, I have known plenty of people who are non-believers who see those that believe as having spiritual anchors.

Link fixed. Hmm...

And yes, we did see some of the results before, but by far not all. You should view the total of results in the pdf file at the bottom. IIRC, that shows not only the responses per country, but also per religion. It showed, for instance, that the Islam is the religion with the most people believing that their god is the only true god.
Read the polls. There is some really interesting stuff there...

A lot of foreign stations are aired in the Netherlands. We have a cable network that's practically necessary to have if you want any kind of TV(besides three bad reception network), and the companies that offer these cable networks decide what stations they put on their network. I believe that every company offers BBC1 and 2, as well as BBC world, since a lot of people enjoy the BBC(Me included, they have a load of cool stuff. Too bad they didn't continue with QI). We also have a bunch of German stations(ARD, ZDF etc.), two Flemish and one Wallonian, and two French ones(IIRC). We even have an Italian one, and a Turkish station(Probably due to the high amount of Turkish immigrants). Oh, and CNN.
And in addition to that 9 Dutch channels, Discovery, National Geographic and some other generic stuff.

I trust the BBC less then I trust my ass, because my ass at least gets alot less shit, alot less frequently out. It is consistently proven to be the least reliabale scource in free media, as the recent "TONY BLAIR=DEVIL" bizzare thing showed.

My sister is in Amsterdam right now. I am trying to get her to watch the Turkish channel, but am afraid she is having to much fun with certain other things the Netherlands are known for.

I got the impression that Britan was WAY to secular for my tastes when I was there. I was actually scared. There where anti-religious riots all the time in Birmingham. Why do you think that is? 25% of them think a world without religion would be more peacful.....damn. Not even France has those levels, good old Catholics that they are.

Your wording is revealing. "Let me draw the conclusion" is certainly a funny way to say it.

Well, first of all that is bullshit. When Mathair Muhammed of "LETS ALL KILL THE JEWS" fame is considerd a Moderate in a liberal Islamic nation (just look at Exitium, in Syria or Suadi Arabia he would be dead), when 70% of Palestinians thinik that the Intifada should not end with the creation of a Palestinian state, you have major goddamn problems.

Oh no! Not again... Please, not another one of those stupid religious threads... I already told you guys - God, the Gospels, the Quran, Mount Ararat and so on: it's all baloney. It's like Santa Claus and Edward Scissorhands and ufos: you would really really really like it to be true, but - and here comes the hard part - it just isn't. Ha! Haha! Bwahahahahahahaha!

Hmpf.

Look: if God made this planet for us, humans, then why is 3/4 of it covered with water while we don't have any gills? Eh? Huh? Guess you didn't see that one coming, eh? Haha! Think about it. Really.

There should be a law against religious threads on forums, gddmnt.

Blade Runner, you have got to...*sigh*

forget it. I was trying to make simple conversation, with a little humor, with CCR, but you come here blabbing that we are all idiots for having beliefs. If you're going to say crap about my religion, please, back it up with some intelligence. I'm not here to say I'm right or I'm wrong, just trying to make sure you don't insult people who have nothing against you.

Errr…. Please say you’re joking…

And religion is interesting!
It’s funny: Christians generally. It’s entreating: Islamism. And it’s intellectually stimulating: Buddhism, Taoism and most Oriental Religious beliefs.

Egh, before we get into a flame fest here, let me pull out by saying, I don't go around preaching my faith, or telling others that my religion is right. I don't do that for many reasons but two especially, I'm not exactly a qualified priest, although, these days, that isn't that hard to become, and two, I don't like to say someone has the right or wrong belief. I mean, I sat there, read the posts about how some of you say Christianity is a violent, warmongering religion, without even taking the teachings of Christ into consideration. I have my beliefs on what I think is right and/or wrong, but I'm not here to preach them. It just angers me when I find so much bull about my beliefs.

Hell no! I'm dead serious!
Look: sure, the example is a simplification, but it makes perfect sense. And sure: I could read a couple of books or visit a few sites, get some background info from that old priest who lives just around my corner, talk with all the immigrants in my neighbourhood and get all intellectual, but my arguments will basically stay the same.

POINT 1
God (or whatever people prefer to call this virtual being) is baloney.

POINT 2
Everyone who says something else, should be shot on sight.

Mind you: these people won't get shot because they believe in God. No, no, no: they will get shot so they can not reproduce and 'spread the word'. Which brings me to point 3:

POINT 3
6 billion people is really 5 billion too much.

And that's a fact!

Hehe.

Blade Runner, I agree, I do, but religion, from an observant point of view is interesting!

I’ve read the bible, but I’m not a Christian (my grandma calls me a heretic!) I like reading most books I can about different religions and their principals and they’re really interesting! Seeing the answers the human race tries to come up with to something that basically it’s impossible for our limited intellects to comprehend!

And I’m personally fond of the Orientals point of view of life and religion since it’s one much more philosophical then the Baroque’s crap of the Western World. It’s more about the Human potential and way of being…

That’s why Religion and religious discussions fascinates me, since the multitude of perspectives can lead to many many interesting questions.

And came on! That argument about the ¾’s of the planet being covered by water was waaayy off. In the existence of God, he could’ve created the planet with more water then earth for a purpose!

…Of course everyone knows that the ultimate answer is 42…

Meh, the one thing I know, it's my faith. And what my enemy may have to be someday (satanists).

And Elissar, he was implying that 5 billion people should be irradicated. If it makes you feel better, I'll call him a commie instead. And for those of you playing the home game, I was only joking around with the guy. Although I didn't like what he said about my faith. Plus, he doesn't believe in Edward Scissorhands, Santa, or UFO's, which I find very disturbing.

Murderer?
