Why should only the order talk about it. The good, the bad and the ugly.

In short? It has some tiny nice things, lots of mediocre stuff and quite some bullshit inside.

If you're such an huge fan like me (duh!) then its NOW the time to be really angry.

AvP3, biggest disappointment ever. Rebellion what have you done?

Colonial Marines now? It really is as bad like they show it in that review. No seriously.

And its not just nostalgia talking here.

I really hoped that it would be good. The 2010 AvP sucked balls and I was really hoping for another good Aliens-game. But AvP2 still is the last good game in that franchise, apparently. Well, apart from Aliens: Infestation, but I haven't played that so far.
Let's hope the Creative Assembly Aliens game will be better.

Man, that sucks. I'm a HUGE Alien (and Predator) fan, but this franchise seems only full of disappointment.

The new AvP apparently sucked. I couldn't even play it on my computer, it was a buggy and sluggish mess. And after only hearing shit about it I never bothered to try it out after I got a new computer.

Word of Obsidian's Aliens RPG got me very excited and curious. But we all know what happened there.

And now this? I still want to try it out, it's been a while since I got my yearly dose of FPS action. But judging from that review, it looks pretty god damn lame.

Don't even get me started on the movies...

AvP3 actually seems like a decent game if you put it next to Colonial Marines.

Why it's so hard to make a damn Aliens game? :( It shouldn't be rocket science.

It's mediocre, don't bother. A couple of nice ideas, great pixel art and tons of wasted potential. :( Play Alien 3 SNES/Genesis instead.

I get the feeling that everyone who gets their hands on the Alien or AvP franchises totaly miss the point of them.

like in this game, if it's true that you're mostly fighting human enemies, then what the hell does that have to do with Alien? I don't go to the Alien franchise if I want an ordinary FPS. I want horror. the marine missions in AvP2 did this perfectly. THAT's what an Aliens game is supposed to be like. you're alone, scared as shit and twitch at the slightest movement in the shadows.

and just as Angry Joe says in his review of AvP3, the movies suck mainly due to the lack of the colonial marines (and being in space or an alien world). they managed to reduce the awesome AvP franchise to lame ass run-of-the-mill b-horror.

I don't completely agree with you, one thing in which I think it is better than the Alien 3 SNES/Genesis game is that it doesn't become as repetitive (mind you, it is not long either) as those games tended to become after a while.

I do think that Wayforward had intended to put more into this game when I look at elements such as the levels. It would be rather strange to plan so many air shafts that lead to nowhere in the beginning.

What I do think is that this game should have developed a little longer.
There should have been more levels and I think the game would have benefited if the characters could carry two weapons or more at the same time (I don't mean the pistol) with all of them being useful in their own way. (right now, once you have the smart gun there is no more need for the other guns).

As for making a good Alien game. Just about before the release of Aliens Colonial Marines I started to look around on the forums and I have been reading opinions posts by people who give some good reasons why games like Aliens Colonial Marines seem to 'miss' the points of the movies, or why a lot of the games have been so average.

One person talked about how A:CM advertises itself as taking control of 'the ultimate badasses'; the Colonial Marines.
The thing is, in the beginning of Aliens the marines indeed portrayed themselves as an ultimate fighting force, showing of how well trained they were and weapons and gadgets they had.
And that they were far more prepared to face Ripley's monster than she and the crew of Nostromo were.

That fantasy and self image was quickly crushed when the marines actually faced the xenomorphs, for all their technological superiority they were very quickly wiped out by the creatures, and the survivors weren't as confident and cocky any more afterwards.

In ACM you now slaughter the xenomorphs by the dozens, of course because of bad AI but also because the xenomorphs are now made so that you can kill them easily, this is a sharp contrast to the creatures we saw on the movie screen.

There is of course that deleted scene from Aliens of the first attack in which a lot of the xenomorphs seemed to run into the auto guns (perhaps helping creating this mindless warrior caste typecast), but the idea was that the xenomorphs learn and adapt new strategies to get around the problem in order to get to their targets.

This is something they should have considered for the game, perhaps less xenomorphs but xenomorphs that are smart and very difficult to defeat, an opponent you do not rush towards but try to out move in order not to be caught by it.

They would have done better if they had tried to recreate the image of the creature of Alien; rather than just a blood thirsty animal it was more of a cunning and very sadistic person who liked to toy with its prey.

Another problem is that the formula of Aliens has been done to many times; elite futuristic warriors are sent out to a colony/space station that has been overrun by an unknown alien menace that has killed the original occupants.

This scenario can be played out in many ways and there are probably still a few executions that have not been done before but only barely but it always plays out in an expected way.
People are bound to become bored of that sooner or later despite how popular the theme may be.

The focus on the creature itself is also becoming rather old, this is not the period of Alien any more, gamers now know what the xenomorph is.
You can not pretend that every time a new Aliens based game comes out that it is all new to the player.

Another poster suggested that it might be better to use the creature more as part of the background, it would still play a role in a campaign or a story but it would no longer be the main element any more.

This also goes for scenarios in which the Weyland-Yutani Corporations or any other human faction/organization is after the creature in order to weaponize them.
Those stories have been done to much, writers should try to do a different script.

I would love to see an attempt being done of recreating elements of one of my most favorite Alien comics; Aliens Apocalypse - The Destroying Angels.
The xenomorphs played a role in this story but they were not the focus of it nor revolved a large part of the story about defeating them, rather they served to help the story run along.

Of course this comic had plenty of flaws I would like to see being done in a different way but still I think it is one of the better stories that has been done with the license.

I guess it's the short lenght of the game because A:I doesn't do anything particular to shake its formula and unlike the SNES/Gen games the marines are much more stiff to control (more Prince of Persia than Contra), so it's not even fun in an arcade kind of way. Add to that the predictable and fixed appereances of the aliens, that they are so easy to dispatch, all the useless air shafts and the mediocre story...

It's a shame because a well done Metroidvania Aliens game would be awesome.

On that I fully agree, I would honestly like to see Wayforward make a 'sequel' in which they take lesson of the suggestions you and I have brought up..

Something else I thought would also be neat is that the player would be able to return to previously explored places but being able to open up new areas with gear that has been collected since the first time the player visited the location.

And yeah, they could have made the xenomorphs more unpredictable, having them move through the ship on their own accord as the player goes from one quest to another.

I really disliked how the eggs respawned on the same place every time you left a level and returned to it.
Imagine the player's surprise to have them instead appear in previously free rooms or at the bottom of stairs/elevators.

I can't go in detail but I happen to know that a lot more was planned for the story of Aliens Infestation and Aliens Colonial Marines before we got the stuff they put in the eventual games.

Way to pour salt on the open wound. I hadn't actually followed development of this game that closely, so this really came as a shock for me. It's like they switched art direction completely towards the end of developement or something. Shit, the finished game looks several years older than the demo version.

The rumour mill suggests that the retreat from nice graphics might be due to PS3 memory limits, supposedly they hit them before half the game was finished or something.

That angryjoe review was awesome. I hope someone takes his advice and makes a real survival horror alien game and not this action shit. Alien meets amnesia?! I'd do her.

Yeah, there you have it. Like I said, I want to be horrified playing an Alien game. I certainly want action segments with pulse rifles and smartguns, but those would be even more satisfying if they were carefully places amidst parts where you had to rely on stealth and smarts to survive.

I'm actually having trouble deciding if, from a gameplay perspective, survival horror would work in the Aliens setting with your typical FPS perspective. The xenos are fast, numerous, can climb on walls and hide in plain sight. Thats a lot different than most survival horror antagonists. The zenos would rape you over and over, and it would not be fun. Doing it well would require a quantum leap in how games are played. This experience screams Virtual Reality headset with motion-tracking. While this tech exists, its primarily used for simulations like flightsims.

Basicly, the situational awareness of the player would have to be closer to what we experience in daily life, as opposed to the limited FOV of a traditional FPS played viewing a monitor.

The part where it it really starts to be funny though is that the review mentions that even that the game HAS such situations, where a xenomorph (rambler?) attacks you and your comrade and you have to escape in the canalsiation. Or where they move trough the hive while they have to avoid quick movements! That is shown in the review. And as he said ... the game is like 1% of such stuff ... the rest Call of Duty in space ... but the generic version.

I really dont think its THAT hard to actually make it correct. They show it that it is possible. Just make it some kind of amnesia game in space and xenos - the ambience.

Eh, com on! You cant be serious about that if you call your self REALLY a fan to the Alien franchise!

The AvP movies sucked for many reasons. Colonial marines have been not one of them. Not a strong reason though. Would it have been a better service to the fans if AvP was in space with Aliens, Predators and marines? Maybe. But it would still have sucked because someone thought its enough for an good movie to have bland replicable characters that get killed around every corner. Aliens =/= SAW.

Alien movies actually are seen for the Xenomorphs, but they are remembered for their characters! Like Ripley, Ash, Dallas, Lambert etc. from the first movie, the Marines from the second movie. The Particularly the cast for the Second movie was so well done that its almost a miracle. Hard to find such good acting in movies. You really hate Burke for what he is and what he did in Aliens. Hell even Alien 3 wasn't THAT bad thx to some of the characters and because Fincher somehow managed to squeeze the best out of the shit issues he had to deal with - I mean the original idea was to have the movie set on a completely wooden planet filled with monks ... when they canceled that script, the director quit and they got Fincher. While half of the movie was kinda done ...

Everything after Alien 3 was bad with the characters and choices. I don't even think that Ripley had that well written lines in Alien 4. Even though she was easily the best in the cast. Though that doesn't say a lot. The plot was stupid, the dialogues flat.

And AvP as movies have been even worse. Even if they had Colonial marines it would still have sucked. Xenomorph movies can only work if the characters feel human and have some depth. You cant tell me people did not feel with Vasquez and Gorman in the shaft!
