Crimea, a Polish indie RPG, has just hit IndieGogo in a bid to secure funding for the further development of the project. The current goal is $37,500 in 40 days.

What makes Crimea interesting? Unlike most other projects, the game is already being developed and is in a fairly advanced state: A playable demo showcasing the technology and the general gameplay is available for download on IndieDB. As it goes, you can try it before you buy it.

Not going to lie, doesn't look half bad. I'm not sure how possible it is for me as an english-speaking American to play a foreign game though

There are a lot of 'foreign games' you can play without vocabulary - Call of Juares, Commandos, Painkiller... It's just a matter of quality translation which is not a high priority for the tech demo. Currently the only non-English sounds are voices of enemies that don't affect game mechanics.

So I'm guessing at the end of the game-development you guys will focus more on English translation? Hook me up with a translator and I'd be willing to help you guys out in translating it to English (I mean, your translator will tell me the "English" version of what you want to say, and I'll help you translate it further into more, well, "English-sounding" English. Meaning you won't find lines in the game that say "You jump in back of truck now!" like in Metal Gear for the MSX. Granted though, like any game when translating it to a different language, the script will change a bit. Look at MGS 1 for example.

And I promise, no drinking on the job....

Alright I don't promise that but I swear I'll get stuff done.

I sort of feel sorry for these guys when I see that they only raised $155 in one week. I know they have five weeks left, but it doesn't bode well. If the next five weeks are the same as the first one, they won't even have raised a grand when their IndieGogo ends. And they need $37,500.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I'm sure the funding will go up more especially in the last few days, but unless someone gives them a bigger push than NMA can I don't see it happening. But if it fails hopefully they will try again.

As odd as it may sound, I also wonder if the amount they are asking for is too small to attract donors. When I see someone asking for $37,500 for a full fledged video game I think "wow, that's cheap" and it makes me nervous the final product will look cheap too. I mean Wasteland 2 is a good comparison in that Crimea, like W2, are trying to make a modern game that has the look and feel of the late 90s classics (most obviously Fallout). But they had millions of dollars to work with. These guys are trying to do it on 1/100th as much money. I'd love to see them come out with an enjoyable game (even if it is smaller and less polished than W2) but it is hard to envision the money and the developers ambition aligning.

As it was said on the indiegogo page $37,500 is the sum for the basic version of the game.
    "Goal #1 (default version) - $ 37 500

A player will follow a predefined sequence of locations, with the ability to enter so called 'random areas' from the global map. The gameplay will be focused on fighting. You will also be able to gain experience, improve your basic skills, buy equipment and take quests that will follow you through the main storyline."

This version boils down to linear story and basic player's parameters that can be enhanced when you gain some experience. Taking into account that we already have developed significant part of battle mechanics and have some content, we plan to distribute costs on buying 3D content on Turbosquid, payment for irregular freelance work and software licenses. This will allow our tiny team to work 1.5 years on the project.

There are also so called 'Stretch Goals', and current state of the development requires to determine which version we will choose before we start adding new locations. Expanded version is more interesting of course.

maybe another problem is that there are pretty many post-apoc-wasteland games out there, or at least games that go in a similar direction, particularly if we are talking about role playing games. I mean just look at the sher number of games that are either in the works or saw some release. And I hope you dont get this the wrong way, it is simply my honest feeling, but the project doesnt strike me as something unique. If you have to decide where to spend your money, then you have to sometimes prioritise, just like every investor does, because there simply are way to many interesting projects out there, and there is only so much money people can spend on video games. Though with saying that I really hope that you can get your project to work and that you will get teh funding. After all, I am nothing more then just some random idiot rambling on the internet.

A big problem is people just got Wasteland 2 and aren't going to be even thinking about another old school post-apocalyptic game for a long time. With Tides of Numenara and Pillars of Eternity coming out soon I won't be backing anymore games until I have gotten the perks I have paid for. It looks like a promising game and I hope it does well.

Our new demo is now available for download. Updates include:
    - new locations
    - new weapon (flamethrowers)
    - improved usability and GUI ('Take All' button, 'fiddle' animations, etc)
    - fixed bugs (duplicating traps, animations, reloading weapons, inventory)
    - basic vehicle

Probably because it was a no-money-back-if-fail campaign, and the fact that it wasn't on Kickstarter.
