Guess it will be some time before we hear anything new about Fallout from Bethesda - I never imagined that they could milk Skyrim THAT long ... but I digress.

It's fair to assume that there will be a Fallout 5, but does that mean there will be a Fallout 6 and Fallout 7, 8, 20?

The question is, 'How will it end?'

So what do you guys think, will Bethesda at some point sell the rights? Will they simply stop making Fallout games alltogether and concentrating on other IPs? I mean even the most popular franchise stops to be profitable at some point, so maybe that could happen here as well?

Bethesda's formula for these games is bound to get old at some point. Doubly now that they have to franchises doing the exact same thing. I don't have a crystal ball, but I could guess that somewhere down the line they either start branching the franchises to multiple directions (like they already have for starters with Fallout Shelter), or somewhere around Fallout 6 or 7 Pete and Todd - or whoever's in charge at the point in time - announce that they thought this was a good point to "end the story of Fallout on a high note and move on" as they have new and more profitable franchises on the go.

Well I expect that the current audience will eventually move on, either focusing on other games or hobbies or simply no longer having the time to play games because of real life matters.

I do think we will see a Fallout 5 and a Fallout 6, 7 is also a possibility.
But as the "old" audience moves on and the influx of new gamers and fans decreases Bethesda at some point will probably conclude that Fallout is not profitable on the moment and put it on ice.

Eventually they will try to do some kind of revival, playing on the nostalgic memories of the fans of 3, 4. 5 etc, and that may even take off before it declines again.

But selling the franchise, I think that is unlikely.
EA has a large collection of IPs in its library that are inactive but EA would never sell for just in case one of them might be able to make them money again. I think the same goes for Bethesda.

Remake of Fallout 1 by Bethesda *shudders*, they will finally have the possibility to deliver the version the original developers intended but could not, because of technical limitations.

A Fallout 1 first person shooter!

Fallout 4 tarnished the commercial legacy Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas set out for the Fallout name.
I know plenty of Fo3 fans who didn't like Fo4 at all.
My prediction is that Bethesda will shit out Fo5 and everyone will fuckin hate it. Then Bethesda will stop making Fallout games or re-release Fo1.

I always thought that Bethesda might become one day a console-only developer. Honestly, it already is already in some way the reality. The PC games always feel like a cheap port. I would say the last PC game Bethesda made was Morrowind.
So who knows, maybe they might continue to make spin-offs like the Fallout-Shelter thing for mobile phones and similar stuff for the console. Heh, who knows they might even do a turn based game for mobile phones!

I never really got a console feel from Fo3/Skyrim. Then again, I've never played PC ports.

I think that the ultimate irony would be that fallout franchise would actually end when the worlds end. So when bu the time of about fallout 12 the world gets nuked.

    The game ends in real life when the game starts;

    That would be poetic

I think it's going to end when it becomes less profitable for them to make Fallout games. In which case the mouse will buy it and we'll have Fallout games every year.

They need mods, and those can only be made on PC.
Imagine for how long a Bethesda game would sell without mods... :lmao:

Either the modern equivalent of PoS by Bethesda pops in or the whole thing fizzles away like it did with Black Isle until PoS.

In any event, Fallout is already dead.

I hated F4, yet F3 has its moments. If F5 will be closer to F3, I will buy. And most of those who liked 3 will buy too, honestly. Im talking about 10 million consumers underneath? There are companies that would sell the employees' mothers to have a franchise where each game has its 10 million guaranteed copies.

Or, Bethesda launches F5 even more dumbed down than F4. Eventually (aside from Bethefags) people will begin to lose the patience with these stupid games made by stupid people and the series will stop selling and go to the ice.

    There are 4 more scenarios:

    1) The majority of buyers actually think that F4 is the right diretion to the franchise.

    2) Bethesda can again outsource a Fallout. And I'm not talking exclusively about Obsidian. (I currently prefer that if they were to make a game of another company, this game would be a spin off of Mass Effect, in the Milk Way). Doing that, there are some chance that we will have again a proper Fallout.

    3) It's LOGICAL that Bethesda games sell to buckets. Of course they do. Nobody made something alike. But a quality competition would compel them to improve, or would sink them for once.

    4) Finally, they can made a awesome game, from nowhere. What are the odds? Well, even a lousy artist can paint a masterpiece, I think.

Personally, I've gotten used to the idea of fallout being a straight FPS and... I think I can accept this. I love, love, love the rpg aspects of the franchise (even fo3s rpg stuff is fun as bare bones as it can be at times) but what I love most about fallout is the different endings, the choices, and the worldbuilding. The universe itself. How much it made sense how well everything fit. New vegas was the quintessential example everything I loved about classic fallout kicked up to eleven. If fallout 5 was new vegas quality with weapon variety, worldbuilding, writing, and choice but has the gameplay of fallout 4.... I think I could grow to love such an entry. But I'm of the opinion that they'll keep getting worse then one day it won't make enough money and they'll stop making them and fallout will die being 90% garbage.

What franchise could go out with a bang better than Fallout, renowned for its nukes.

Sadly it will go away with not a bang, but a whimper.

It will end not with a bang...actually it will end in a bang, as the games become increasingly more casualised however, it will still make money off of the brainless slobs called gamers these days.

Despite their games following a fairly standard formula for a long while now, Bethesda did experiment with Fallout 4, probably far more than they would with TES.
They made the game even more FPS-focused, far more than TES could ever be. They changed the dialogue system. Introduced the voiced protagonist. Added lot more "sim" crap, settlement building and what not. Added a tie-in free-to-play mobile game. In short, they experimented a bit, with the game and with the general approach to the IP.
The changes between FO4 and FO3 are far greater than the changes between TES V and TES IV, and FO4 is a black sheep of the company right now. It sold well, but its reception wasn't as positive as they hoped it would be. Even among their fans, FO4 boasts a weird reputation. Plus, add that Beth fucked up on several instances - texture pack, for example, and above all, paid mods - many people still have a soar taste in their mouth, and will have for a long while.

All in all, Fallout is currently in a weird place. I'd say many Bethesda fans favor Fallout 3 (even FNV) over Fallout 4 and that Bethesda doesn't want more negative reception at the moment. On the other hand, FO4 sold well and some of the changes were widely praised. They will probably keep making TES games in a vein that Skyrim was (with technical improvements and voiced protagonist), but when it comes to Fallout, they will either keep experimenting more or will make a jump back to FO3.
If they do the former, Fallout will probably drown in a cesspool of free-to-play additions, even more cosmetic DLCs and greater FPS focus. And I wouldn't be surprised if we get an introduction of some sort of multiplayer (similar to ME3). To be fair, I'm surprised Bethesda hasn't gone in this direction already. I guess their previous games were not enough FPS-focused for that. FO5 will likely be.
BoS vs Super Mutant deathmatch? Why not. It wouldn't be the first single player sandbox game to have a multiplayer in a "closed" environment like an arena.

As for the other option, Bethesda might take a step back and make FO5 to be closer to FO3, to satisfy their older crowd. I don't see this likely however. I believe they will keep making TES games for their older fans, and Fallout will go down in history as an FPS.
