I Think I'm Onto Something Here.... (Spoilers!)

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Right, i've been searching on several notable websites, most prominently the Vault about this cut companion Ulysses. By now many people know that Wolfhorn Ranch was once his, yet he abandoned this life, but i've found a lot of info about him.

In Dead Money, the companion Christine says she was rescued by the man named Ulysses, this is indicated by her saying she was rescued by a man (from the big empty) with a flag of the old world on his back, this man said to her that he was searching for somebody else, who I believe to be the courier. He also tells Christine that she should go after Father Elijah because Ulysses knew what it was like to search for someone who had a major impact on his life, i.e. the courier.

During Dead Money, Christine mentions that she was rescued from Father Elijah in the Big Empty by a courier "who wore the flag of the old world on his back". This courier seemed to imply he was seeking another, telling Christine to go after Elijah because he knew what it was like to search for someone who'd had a major impact on your life

Also, in Primm, what Nash says is relevant to this. Because Nash says that the courier before the main courier, when he say the couriers name on the list, Ulysses turned around and asked if this was for real, and then left saying, "No, let 'Courier Six' carry the package'.

It is also implied Ulysses has links towards the legion, because in the collectors' edition card set, he shares a suit with the legion members such as vulpes inculta, caesar and aurelius of phoenix.

Finally, in several of the possible endings for Dead Money, characters here out a "battle at the divide (grand canyon)" between "the two couriers", this heavily implies that Ulysses' hunt for the courier will be abackground storyline for all the DLC, finally culminating in a duel in the final DLC.

If this does actually happen (highly likely it will), I think I will personally run up to the head of Obsidian and hug him, as well as give him my house, but yeah, let's all hope this happen, because if it starts out as a background story nobody notices, then starts to grow into a life changing (in game) moment, where everybody is kicking themselves off of not realising it themselves.

Here is a link:

That page is extremely incitefull.

I would very much disslike it if such a (seemingly) interesting character like Ulysses would become a end-boss of some sort. He is just to good material for a interesting companion.

I'm not even sure if he might be an end-boss, although everybody is mentioning a battle at the divide, who knows the antagonist might not be ulysses, the two couriers might teams up for all I know. It would be good if they were old friends or something of the sort, but i'm extremely curious to see how this pans out, I want to learn why Ulysses if going after the Courier in the first place.

yeah I would love the "old friends" plot a lot. Maybe the curier has done something very bad like leaving him behind somewhere and now he is following him. There should be options to help ulysses in a similar situation and thus get the friendship again or simply leave him again.

I think it would be good if there was multiple outcomes, like how Ulysses is a supposed legion companion, if you sided with the NCR (i'm going by that he was an old friend) he starts to distrust you, so you have to show why you sided with the NCR, or something like that.

I'm a bit confused. Other than the card, there's not a whole lot of information about Ulysses. Why do so many have a hard-on for an NPC you know almost nothing about? I just don't get it. It's just a dude with dreadlocks... wtf?

Because the DLC does huge foreshadowing of things to come, that Ulysses *might* be some nemesis of the courier in the past/future?
It's a cut companion from the maingame and Chris Avellone wrote it, that's enough to be excited about.

That's what I would've asked, why exactly is Ulysses searching for the Courier? What would be the battle of the Great Divide? Did they clash at some point and this, "battle" became somewhat famous?

I did found some spray also saying that "You can go home now courier 6", but what does those mean? Maybe they'll tell us?

These things will most probably be answered in the forthcoming DLC. From what I have read in playing Dead Money, is that Ulysesses holds some kind of grudge against the courirer for whatever reason. The Great Divide is a prewar weapons/technics research facility where the courier and Ulysess will probably meet at some place.

I heard the Great Divide is what the wastelanders call the Grand Canyon.

@idiotfool: How can you say that, if you read the article, you would know that many of the games NPCs and Dead Money forshadow a conflict between Courier 6 and Ulysses.

@Awildman: Oh, I forgot about that, I sure I found that on the Vault alongside other grafiti mentioning new canaan, and sierra madre. Good find though, where is it actually at so I can have a look.

No the Great Divide is The Grand Canyon not a Facility.

Exactly becuase of the fact that we know almost nothing but it seems there was at some point the idea to give him a important part in the game. ( I really hope they did not removed it for the idea to make a DLC out of it ... but oh well)

EDIT: Sorry you are right, I meant the Big Empty in my last post.

The Great Divide is likely not the Grand Canyon, actually (this was an early assumption, but there are arguments to the contrary). But yeah, it's not a facility.

I think the battle with Ulysses will be left for the last DLC, maybe the next one will be New Canaan and the Burned man.

Aren't there many 'divides' that could be the 'great divide'? If I remember correctly, some people have been there and talk about great raging tornadoes, which I don't think are around the grand canyon all that much. But I don't live round there, so I don't really know.

Besides, I've heard plenty of NPCs talk about the Grand Canyon, usually when talking about the Burned Man.

Also, it's entirely possible the 'great divide' isn't a big canyon or something; The Big Empty isn't empty at all, so I wouldn't be surprised if the great divide was more metaphorical or something similar to that; Likewise, it says 'the edge of the world' which is a decidedly vague statement. it seems like it might be more edge of their known world; like the edge of Caesars or NCR territory; or maybe right next to some horrible place that's utterly uninhabitable, affected by something like the Cloud.

I like that one possible explanation on the vault wiki, that the "Big Empty" comes from "Big Mt." as of Mountain. Similar stuff can be found at Novac (just a No Vacation Sign) for example.

Dunno about anyone else but I always assumed "The Great Divide" was just what people have taken to calling the Midwest. In Fallout 1/2 it was mentioned as being a big radioactive dustbowl with massive storms which ties in nicely with what Nash and Cass say about it.

It divides the continent and would basically be the "edge of the world" for most people on the West Coast.

^^^^
That actually sounds about right, because many travellers and merchants from the west would probably die going through there, so yeah I agree with you idea.
