Leaked FO4 Footage

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Not sure if this appropropriate to post, but there is some leaked Gamescon footage that Bethesda keeps shutting down on Youtube, but some hilarious folks uploaded it to... a let's say NSFW location and tagged it appropriately as "Big Ass" with an equally hilarious title.

So instead of posting the link, here is an article on Kotaku about it (which contains the actual link) and click on the link in there if you care to:

The beginning is a German speaking presenter.

- Really all it shows is some Run and Gunning, which is what I was afraid of, with a little updated animation work over FO3 - some of the jankyness is sort of still there, leftover from FO3 or Skyrim, don't know.
- The Ghouls, or whatever they are, at one point sort of warped through the side of the door as the Player drew Aggro; Also sliding across the terrain quite a bit (seriously they need a new engine)
- Story elements were not really shown, but my German is rusty so I don't know what she's saying as the FO4 footage starts.
- No Command/Control/Strategy things are shown either and I still fully expect companion command/ordering are just as dull/underworked/frustrating as they were previously and in ES games.
- The 'FPS' part 'looks' a little more immersive, so perhaps they are working on you know making the FPS part not bad as it reminds me of a melding of RAGE and FO. Basically mindless 'fun' without thinking too much.

Other Thoughts:
- Still doesn't 'look' to have any sort of classic strategy elements or classic appeal to me, just more of the same from FO3 just with a little better look; maybe worth a Pirate or when its 5 bucks several years from now for the inevitable "complete" edition
- Story bits and dialogue still really 'hush-hush' either because its not that great or its somehow good (I'm afraid the dialogue will be rather short due to voice acting and less reading/branching)

Even if you're a die hard Bethesda fan, you still should NOT buy F4 on release.

1. It will be extremly buggy - I mean com on, that's not even Bethesda bashing anymore at this point. Its fact.
2. You can bet your ass that there will be some kind of GOTY edition with all of the DLCs, patches and bug-fixes.

I didn't see any big butt guy in that footage, just a bunch of shoulder shuffling action.

The animations by themselves are decent. But they look quite bad when the environment comes into play - ghouls sliding across the ground, even walking into walls like in 3 and New Vegas. The graphics are good, and with the modern lighting, the game will look fantastic when ENBs are made.

Shooting in New Vegas is almost fine and even pretty good as long as you have the unofficial patch (YUP), which corrects a misaligned two-handed rifle animation that a lot of rifles use. The only other problem that prevents the shooting from being great are terrible collision meshes in the environment - especially rocks, and the bullet impacts not having any physics on NPCs.

Considering Emil Pagliarulo is again lead writer for Fallout 4, we should be cautious, of course. But regardless, I think Obsidian will get to make another Fallout after 4 that will release late 2017 or sometime in 2018.

Which is why it sort of reminds of RAGE, but without the fluid animation work with the AI interacting with the environment correctly. I mean its 2015 and Bethesda's engine still doesn't have such capability, which even other game engines sometimes already had a decade ago.

The writing is going to make or break it for me. I can put aside that I need some actual strategy or command/control elements for companions, which I doubt will be present even if those things are possible in FPS/RPG Hybrids, but if the setting is pants-retarded like FO3 with dumb quests on top - it won't be worth my time.

I never finished Bethesda's last game either, and now I know why. The amount of busy-work, distractions, and mediocrity bored me to tears.

At least the narrative and writing practically can't get worse than Fallout 3's. Fallout 4 will probably have plenty of lore about the Massachusetts area and nearby regions, but that doesn't account for good and engaging writing.

Probably going to be more Lovecraft-esque sidequests.

Because when I think of New England, I only ever think of the Revolutionary War and that racist guy who wrote about creepy space squid-gods.

You know, I used to think NMA was full of retarded Fallout 1 and 2 fanboys when I first joined... but after watching the leaked Fallout 4 footage and seeing that Bethesda had lied about half of the things that were promised and has just recycled half of the Fallout 3 assets at this point, it's made me reconsider that stance on this whole thing. Fucking christ, I actually had hopes that this game would be good.

I don't see how they've recycled "half the assets." That's just an exaggeration. They may have reused and retouched some models, which makes sense from a lore perspective, but not as much as you suggest.

The game will be overall good I'm predicting, but I can't be as sure regarding the narrative and writing, especially because the lead writer, Emil, is the same person who was lead writer for Fallout 3 and Skyrim. The narrative needless to say is an extremely important aspect to Fallout, so even if almost everything else is great, but the narrative is bad, Fallout 4 will not be a good Fallout game.

What I thought was good news was that Courtenay Taylor, the female voice actor for the player character, confirmed in a podcast that there will be approximately 175,000 lines of dialogue in the entire game. So we can be sure there will be extensive variety in the dialogue. She also specifically mentioned that BGS' voice crew has been actively aware of avoiding the dialogue snippet problem where it doesn't really match up with the character's response.

Well, here's the thing about just claiming numbers when talking about dialogue.

Numbers don't mean much if a good chunk of those lines are just variations of "Yes, I will do that" or "Let me think about it".

We've yet to see a dialogue that extends beyond that.

I admit you're right that we have no way of knowing. Let's say 33% of the lines are short quips; there still will be a lot of normal, lengthy dialogue for the other 67%. There is also the "8 personalities" design for the player dialogue, so I'm still optimistic about the dialogue.

We can't say a lot about the dialogue, but the environments look detailed and large. That is my biggest disappointment with New Vegas - too many marked locations that should be unmarked, so many one room tiny shacks. Even the real Mojave desert has more to see than as portrayed in New Vegas. The main narrative and writing is excellent, but the environmental design leaves a lot to be desired. Fallout: New Vegas is my favorite game, but goddamn, its graphics prevent it from fully conveying the setting. It's just that extra graphical fidelity that makes a big difference in how the game world feels. I agree with Todd on that. Now that the visuals will also be great, with further visual mods we can finally have visuals in Fallout that can be something worthy of this:

I still have no idea how the fuck they will implement 8 prsonalities in conversations when the UI is hardlocked to 4, and 8 personalities would mean that there would be multiple ways.... of saying the exact same thing.... Why not.... fucking Skill Checks? Oh yeah, forgot, those don't exist anymore.

I mean the demo showed that even when talking to the robot you only get 4 dialogue options, and the two videos have shown that at least 2 of the options are interchangeable.

That should about cover the extent of their dialog system. Then you throw in a couple of Perk related skill checks and it's done.

We have not seen everything yet, but just the animations alone look like directly taken from F3. Particularly in combat. I really hoped they would have updated at least those.

At least this is a BGS game that actually looks pretty good for its time. Looks better than GTA 5 for PC. I can't see how it looks worse than Witcher 3 sometimes. The animations in the leaked gameplay are concerning though, like the ghouls sliding a little, because that generally can't be modded out due to the engine.

Even if the writing isn't on the levels of New Vegas, I expect it to at least be coherent and not force some BS on you like 3's ending. It could even be great, with consequences that run deep, and be a turn around from BGS' trend since Oblivion, but we'll know at release.
