Playstation 4 Announced, Diablo 3 and more coming

Sony held a conference today where they announced their plans for Playstation 4. It seemed to have quite a few reveals for a non-E3/Major conference event.

Spec-wise: x86 CPU, enhanced PC GPU confirmed, 8GB OF UNIFIED RAM

A new Killzone, new Infamous. Diablo 3 was announced to be ported to the new console (as well as PS3?)

Some interesting features like playing the PS4 games on the Vita (similar to WiiU) and it sounded like playing single player games for your friends across the network (or at least watching them and somehow helping out?)

Did anyone else follow this? What do you think?

The article linked by sea covers it fully.

I'll just add that "more emotional attachment" is hogwash. Attachment is created by content, not by graphics. I have yet to find a modern game that created the same sort of attachment as I felt to Virgil in Arcanum. When he bolted after Quintarra, I spent hours scouring Arcanum looking for him, before finding him and seeing what happens. Quite shocking too.

Or the immersion of Fallout and Fallout 2. Or the atmosphere of System Shock and System Shock 2. I can go on and on, but really, corporate monkeys should shut up.

8GB OF UNIFIED SUPERFAST RAM

Fixed. Was going to get the PS4 anyway (more interested in Sony exclusives than Microsoft ones) but everything I hear about the console is reassuring.

Also loving the "automatic recording of the last 15 minutes of play".

Nice article. Indeed the biggest fear I have is that with the next generation the mid-budget games will completely disappear. It was already a rarity in this generation, but next? :\

well, what i see missing is any confirmation on if they are going to be using their DRM to prevent used game sales, and actual hardware documentation.

saying 8 gigs of ram and 50% downsampling makes me think they are using something akin to the preliminary hardware specs for the xbox 720 which cant sustain a fill rate to draw a 1080 HD picture at 60 FPS without HDR/Bloom or AA or anything.

Hooray, even more emphasis for graphics and less for everything else that counts. Also hooray for the fact that my pc will not run new games, because of this console shift shit, not that it will matter, since the games will be shit anyway.

Looked trough the trailers that they offered and frankly i was not able to tell any shocking differences to ps3. My memory might be failing me though since ive been on a pc for the last 3 years. And yeah, that gamasutra article was quite spot on really, just a lack of creativity to actually make use of the new processing power in any meaningful way.

I wonder if graphics really wow people anymore like they used to, games have looked pretty good/good enough ( at least in my opinion) graphics wise for the past 3 years. Style and art direction is completely different matter though.

Nice writeup Sea. I felt the same way watching the Killzone demo, but chalked it up to the fact that I was watching a seedy leaked video.

It would be nice to see something that broke genre boundaries or brought something truly revolutionary to a genre, rather than seeing the same game with a slightly improved palette.

Hopefully more of the technical details/pricing will come out at E3.

Kind of a meh lineup they showed, Scripted FPS after Scripted FPS, an Auction House Hack n' Slash proted to consoles (Error 37 confirmed for PS4!).

Altho I am a big fanboy of Infamous, and Watchdogs still looks pretty good.

Also LOL at David Cage's statement "With the PS4 we can now forget about technological limitations!". They could've forgoten about tech limitations years ago if they had made the jump to PC.

They only showed one FPS and according to a writer at IGN there was someone playing the game on stage.

This pretty much sums up the Diablo 3 PC community.

First world problems ...

Ayup. I've never seen a community that was so whiny as Blizzard's. They shit and moan about their gamees far, far more than they play them it seems.

On topic, my reaction fits in a single word; ''meh''. The hardware is already dated, most of the games are yet another sequel, albeit Watch Dogs looks nice, but we'll have to see how it plays in a non-scripted seuqence, because the script there was incredibly obvious. Also, the social aspects are nice, I guess, but that's not why you play games, now do you? I didn't buy a current-gen console, and if that's the ''next-gen'' then looks like I'll stay on my trusty PC for now.

to be fair though they have all reason to "whine" about it since D3 is not even close to the quality of the past games. There is no real end game content, and there is also no PvP despite the fact that it was promised and also "advertised" (it was on the back of the box as far as I remember) and they promised to release it with patches. Still nothing here yet. The items and Skills in D3 are very simplified and almost boring as only a small number of stats and affixes are important and usefull. And the game has only 4 players, the console supports 4 players (coinsidence? Who knows ...) despite the fact that D2 had 8 player support.

Gametrailers interviewed a guy from Bethesda after the Sony event, what didi he say about PS4? Any Fallout/TES news or at least mentions?

so a custom AMD jaguar series 8 core CPU

that sounds impressive!

8 gigs of DDR5 ram. thats good.

physical RJ-45 jack with bluetooth and wifi bgn

AMD radeon GPU.

what i dont notice is that one of the biggest things for the AMD series is that they allow the CPU to step in and handle some GPU pre-proccessing, more so than before if the CPU availability is there.

i dont see notes if they will have that. it would probably help a lot as it will have an 8 core CPU.

now we just need some enterprising person to find out which radeon video card will support those video specs.

I'm wondering if there will be any difference between the PS3 and PS4 verions of Diablo 3. Seems to me like PS3 can pretty much max out whatever it has to offer. I'm also wondering if they will remove the auction from those, in which case they will be the versions to get.

dont be so sure about that. There are lvl63 items you can craft now, but they still suck. Its not even the issue that you dont get items in D3. The issue is that 99,99% of them simply suck because the game has a VERY HIGH focus on just a handfull of stats. Finding those stats in the correct configuration is pretty much impossible in the game. You can find some item which has great stats like a Bow with high DPS for your deamonhunter. But what is the problem? It doesnt has your main stat on it, or something else that is not usefull like a missing socket or what ever.

I really have no clue how they want to get that working on the console AND to make it fun. D3 has no kind of endgame and the loot is boring.
