Well we can eliminate that it will be creative and interesting and have good story telling with complex choices.

Who cares? Why even follow anything Bethesda related? Most likely is gonna be garbage made for the lowest common denominator. If there's one company that deserves to go under (while much better companies got shutdown) is Bethesda, but given that they have now that Microsoft money, that's not gonna happen (still don't give a shit about anything they announce, unless it's to meme how bad it is at release.).

I wonder if they've learnt anything from 4 and 76 especially. I assume that there won't be a voiced protagonist, if anything that comes out of Todd's mouth had any meaning at this point.

Bethesda learning from past games, that's rich.

Difference from the past though is that they got a lot of bad PR for their last game even from their shills

You mean that game that is getting more and more defense from their usual shills because they put NPCs in it? Yeah, no. They put NPCs in it because they knew it would wash away a lot of the backlash.

    They learned nothing.

They still had to backpedal into reintroducing NPCs as a result of said backlash though

It's something that they didn't want to do give how long it took them to put NPCs in it (it took a year and an half to do it). Todd Howard really wanted his shitty idea of all players being NPCs to work.

It doesn't mean in the slightest that they learned anything, they just knew exactly what they needed to do to win back the fans they lost.

The sooner you drop the thought that Bethesda has seemingly learned anything, the better. You are just setting yourself up to disappointment. Because they know if they just make another Fallout 3 or Fallout 4, the shills and the gaming "journalists" will heap praise on the game, and 76 will be just swept under the rug like nothing happened, because Bethesda fans have the memory span of a goldfish.

And i'm 100% sure if 76 wasn't an online game and had npcs since day one, the reception would have been far better, regardless of the content in the game.

I disagree, I think Bethesda does “learn” from their mistakes. It’s just that the actions they take to correct their “mistake” just end up making the next game even worse.

As a minor example, Fallout 3 received some criticism for Lockpicking/Science only being useful at skill levels 25, 50, 75, and 100. Bethesda fixed this in Fallout 4... by removing the skills entirely, and replacing them with 5 ranks of perks that serve the same purpose.

Unless Bethesda expanded their development teams significantly, there's no way they are developing a new Fallout game.

AFAIK, Bethesda does development like this: They split the concept and development into two teams. When the development guys are working on a game, the concept and design guys are working on the next game. When the game being worked on is finished, the devs then go on to the conceptual game and the concept guys go on the next. This way, everyone is working and they don't need to shuffle people in and out between phases of development.

For example, right now Bethesda is working on finishing Starfield. This means the concept guys are working on TES VI. So yeah, its rather unlikely they are doing a Fallout 5 right now. The A team of Bethesda, I mean. The other studio is working on Fallout 76.

HOWEVER, I find the possibility of a Fallout game in the next four years rather high. Why? Because we are at the dawn of a new console generation. The last mainline Fallout game was released in 2015. At the current pace, a Fallout 5 would only come out at this decade's end, which means over ten years without a mainline Fallout release, or even a New Vegas-style spin-off. The fanbase is hungry for more Fallout. Literally starving.

So... these are the possibilities I see:

    1. The Bethesda B team (Bethesda Maryland?) of 76 is working on a new Fallout game in its concept stage.

    2. Bethesda created a new team, perhaps straight out a "Fallout Team" - I heard a rumor like this once. They are working on a Fallout game now, while Bethesda A team is making Starfield and conceptualizing TESVI, and the B team is doing 76.

    3. New Vegas-style spin-off done outside Bethesda but still inside the Microsoft umbrella

Reminder that between FO3 and FO4, eight years went by. What happened between those? New Vegas.

The development team will probably take in some of the criticisms, but based on how Fallout 4 turned out after how well Fallout New Vegas was received I think the team will continue to do its own thing and what is currently popular in mainstream gaming.
So the settlement building will probably be back and they will look into multiplayer mode.

There is indeed little point in waiting for any announcements Bethesda may made and expect that they will tell that they are going to make an experience closer to Fallout New Vegas as they have already demonstrated that they do not have any similar game design philosophies.

No doubt about that Bethesda is one of the worst developers ever, I am not even sure if their publishing division is that good but perhaps it is.
But they got the hearts and minds of mainstream gamers, even if these are a little grumpy since Fallout 76.
They complain about not wanting to support Bethesda any more unless.... But once Bethesda announces a new Elder Scrolls of Fallout 5 they usually turn their opinion around.
Sort of like drug users swearing off that they will never use a product again and loudly decry their pusher, only to come back to him and pay him anything to get a fix.

It doesn't matter that Bethesda is putting together a dedicated team to develop Fallout games, as these would still be based on the lore Bethesda has established since Fallout 3 and 4.
If anything, it is only a guarantee that future Fallout games will resemble Bethesda's earlier titles even more.

Even if they pulled people from Obsidian now that they and Obsidian are owned by Microsoft it would not change things.
Heck even if Tim Cain and Boyarsky was put on this we will not see a return to grace. Both have already shown that they are not the people any more who once created Fallout and work on other titles known from the late 90s and early 2000s.

This is not me being pessimistic, this is simply the current state of the franchise.

I'm not commenting on quality, I'm commenting on the Bethesda game making process*. They can't be making a Fallout game right now, except in the situations I described.

*its actually a pretty cool and logical process, because it always keeps everyone working on something. Some companies have both the concept and dev guys work at the same time, then when concept is done, the concept guys often get fired or shuffled. Instead, they ensure the design work of the next game is already done by the time the old one is finished up. Good division of labour.

Honestly, if they don't have Emil Pagrulio writing it, the writing quality will likely shoot up an order of magnitude. Mr. Pagrulio has no idea how to make a proper Fallout story. He should stick to TES or something.

Honestly... I think it could change with the right people. Someone like Chris Avellone or John Gonzales in the right place, could change a lot. Its definitively possible to make a Good AND popular NuFallout, New Vegas was strong evidence of that. The fanbase has been literally screaming for another New Vegas for almost a decade.

I can't comment on Tim Cain and Boyarsky, I have not played The Outer Worlds. Not even sure it could run on my computer.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of putting blind trust on old devs. So far I've seen a lot of decline come from that direction. I would rather see some new kid who has studied the steps of the olds to create the new and gets how they think and where the series come from.

But who knows... sometimes an old dev still has it.

Just look at their idea of combat balance. They've been doing the same game since Morrowind and they still can't figure out any other way to increase difficulty or even design the game other than giving enemies more health and creating damage sponges that you have to unload 20 shots to the head to kill. Bethesda is fucking incompetent at game design. The ones doing the models and textures and world design are fine. Not amazing, but fine, they are competent. Everyone else? Incompetent buffoons that don't learn a damn thing.

Would always be great to see a turnaround for company to do good but at this point it's too late. They will move forward with "their lore" and I think that the lore has become so unbelievably broken that we need a retcon back to Fallout 2/Tactics and they're never going to do that. So even if they "learned their lesson" the game will be built on a broken foundation. We're pasts the point of no return. They can't do a good Fallout game. They can do a good casual mindless fun game that you can enjoy on its own merits, but why even call it Fallout at that point?

They can learn, it just depends what they want to prioritize.
Was Fallout-76 successful for them, financially? Genuinely asking, cus I really could not care less.
If answer is yes - then they have been learning all the lessons, from - "Wow, old-school fallout-nerds sure are particular about their looore, lol, buncha homos." to "Oh boy, gold, gold, gooold!"

I mean - it's *just* math - we cry HARD and they STILL WIN that money, then letting us keep crying IS the lesson.
When Toddy says shit like "I actually played FO2, I got it on my laptop.", which they threw at us when devving FO3 - that wasn't a lie.
This reminds me of Greta Thunberg and climate change, where she keeps pikachu-facing at all the presidents "did you KNOW what we are melting the ice caps!? But but but - did you KNOW!?"
That's us, at this point, we are Greta Thunberg of Fallout lore - YES, Todd knows. YES, he will nod emphatically if we bring to his attention this error or that oversight. And wow, will we be all pikachu-faced when FO5 turned out to be FO76, but with more voice-acting, more zombies, and Jet now present in the fossil record - Myron never existed, neither did any of the events of FO1 and 2 ": O" - and who's SHOWERING in that melted permafrost mineral wealth? Todd is.
