I Hope Pillars wins Best RPG. That would be so delicious.
It won't because Fallout 4 is in the same category and these awards are voted on by dumbasses who think Fallout 4 is an RPG.
Ugh I hate how RPG gets thrown around for games like Fallout 4 that are in no way RPGs. Games like Fallout 1 & 2? Yes those are RPGs. Games like Fallout 3 & Oblivion? No. Some people(Bethesda fans) have told me that if you can roleplay in it or it's open world then it's an "RPG".
They confuse LARP or make-believe with RPG. Hell, Diablo 2 is more of an RPG than Fallout 4 at this point, simply because the game allows you to create builds and chosing classes that have actually some meaningfull impact on the gameplay, where in Fallout 4 the gameplay is as linear as fuck. Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, RPG my ass ... glorified shooters ... nothing more, nothing less.
Pillars is fantastic, I hope it wins something, but I highly doubt it. I'm also happy for the success of the Witcher 3. I'm not really a fan of the series I just couldn't get deeply involved with it... but I'm glad it's getting recognition because I feel like there is genuine thought and effort put into this game. The narrative is challenging, the game doesn't patronize you or "hold your hand" so to speak, the gameplay is quite dynamic and there's plenty of entertaining content. The customer friendly approach of CD Project Red is also a nice plus. I'd like it to set some kind of very high bar for mainstream titles, so half-assed, uninspired lazyness just wouldn't cut it anymore at the very least when it comes to RPGs. But that's just my wishful thinking.
These awards are always rigged as fuck. Fallout 4 will definitely win best RPG with Beth winning best Dev.
I think we all know that the popular awards will go out to the company that had the best marketing ... not the best game.
That's not really true. In fact, many big budget popular games have been getting a less than stellar critical reception recently. Judging from the critical response and my own experience with the games, The Witcher 3 will top Fallout 4 in GotY awards.
I have to agree. If some would let the hype fall out of their head and objectively look at the beginning of the game, its easy to see your role is the one Bethesda wants you to be in 3 easy examples:
1. Low or High Int does not change what you say or how you sound
2. The person the player plays AS is described as having "military" background
3. Third quest into the game helping the "Minutemen" and 'helping' Preston Gravy has 0 alternatives to completing it and advancing to the rest of game requires the 1 solution of killing (i.e. utilizing your "military" role)
So already the "role" of the player is a Military "Yes" Man, or hell maybe "Sarcastic" bumblefuck that goes on a killing spree without questioning any of it. Can't join the Raiders or talk to them, can't be neutral, can't betray/be devious/bring peace, etc. Kill and go to the next quest, cha-ching!
I don't know about anybody else, but I like to play multiple playthroughs through FO type games being different people. One might be evil as hell, another middle-of-the-road Rick Grimes type person just trying to do what needs to be done to survive, or just avoiding conflict/killing altogether with "smarts."
Critical Reviews, maybe. But remember ... Fallout 3 got awards for it's writing ... like seriously ... someone somewhere decided that this game of all the stuff that was released in that year, had the BEST writing, or at least good enough to deserve some award. I would be very surprised to see a lot of changes here. Albeit, I do think the Witcher 3 deserves a lot of the praise it gets. No doubts about that. So if W3 wins, it would be well deserved.
Gah, no aim-assist...
A controller-noob like me nearly got killed by the stupid rad-roaches while frantically shooting walls and ceilings
Now I'm gonna depend entirely on lame-ass VATS o_-
Apparently that's a problem, VATS is more powerful then normal and VATS is boring.
Is VATS useful? I used it only a couple times then went back to free aim since I can snipe with pistols and rifles which is much easier and useful then 35% chance to hit.
I find it very useful in close quarters. That's where it excels and is better than even the best of manual aiming. The slowdown in time, the reduction in damage that you take, and the critical chance bonus are what make it useful in close quarters.
Christ the dialogs are painful...
1. Stop with the uncanny-valley in every damn facial expression, it impresses nobody. Well, probably lots of people, but to heck with them!
2. Camera angles, with the all-important shaky-effect. At least the shaky isn't as eccentric as in Mad Max, that was very shaky! But yeah, the sideways cameraman-following-along angle is lame, and the back-and-forth when you reply is tedious and managed to bug itself at least once where the two stare at each others for a lengthy ammount of time with no options (basically stuck), then suddenly unstuck and able to continue conversation (sigh)
3. They actually got lil insults for you, while you wonder wtf to reply "Hello!? Anybody in there?"
4. Maybe it's just me, but I always need to turn up speech volume in Beth games...
I'm trying to be positive!
Eh... it was easyer than I feared to free aim w guns, I guess I need to get more used to it - again, I'm on PS and new to consoles.
Power Armor retrieval in the very first mission, ho-boy, so much candy, I sure loves my candy, and I do NOT like bitter, sour vegetables! No sirree, no broccoli for me!
And jumping is weeeird
And seriously, the whole you-have-a-kid-thing is hampering with my little immersion, it sucks to have that established for me, to be honest, "Ur a dad", no, dads are lame, I wanna be a prodigy - a nobody who suddenly - "No, ur a dad"
I hate having marriage forced on my character like that, especially when I made his wife ugly and the child being forced is awful. Pre release Fallout 4 I was hoping maybe I would be able to play as a woman who's only into other women but then I heard Bethesda was working on it and the background was forced on you as if this was to be default Shepard's story.
I ran into the Vault-Tec rep from the intro at Goodneighbour, he's a ghoul now and complains to me about not having anyone from before the war to talk to. Then one building over there's another ghoul who talks to me about listening to radio shows before the bombs dropped.
Just seems really lazy and yeah, quite annoying.
Gah, I can't even begin to pretend to care for stupid sad "minutemen" and their plight, why is everything so simplistic? From helping entire nations, back to some cowboy dude w a cowboy hat, wtf...
Who cares about idiots with cowboy complexes!?
Why did they just resurrect Lucas Simms!?
If no current 'professional' review has mentioned it, there's a crippling bug in the version I have (XBOX One): The game gets stuck at the escape from the vault start when playing as a female. I tried three times to get around this, and got nowhere. Thanks, Bethesda.
Long time lurker first time poster. Hello
Not played it but:
Is this yet another vault that didn't have a G.E.C.K?
Did everyone before hand just think "there's a person in there that build a small town for us within 5 minutes of thawing out. We'll just wait"
The town the Protagonist lived in never got raided or occupied before he comes back despite the fact there's a cool robot and useful garage there?
Do you find the power armour because no one wanted to risk getting it Dirty?
"Oh my God, my wife the love of my life I miss her so much....oh hey you look like a nice bit of crumpet, don't mind if the dog watches do you?
What's going on, where is everybody?.. Oh, hey a dog. I am now a master of the wastes...Fear me!!!
Is there only a few endings because they all end with " It was just a dream" Bethesda writers read this. "Dude. We are so using this for our next game"
I have a friend that has no idea why I hate the Bethesda "Fallouts". Despite me explaining in detail why they are not Fallout games. He is always complaining about having no money, yet preorders two yes two copies of Fallout 4 but won't buy Wasteland 2 or pillars because they're too expensive.......
