    Modding FOT characters

Been playing FOT again, but I have been messing around with the editor this time. Im trying to edit the characters that you start with, and who you can recruit. I hate that you have to wait till almost the last mission to finally have the team you want put together. Are there any write ups for creating a character from scratch and inserting him into the beginning recruit pool? I am having trouble finding info as this stuff is starting to get too old for anyone to care about anymore

I have the full version of FOT now since 2 Days. I have played it already but now i find the character are very boring :P

I have already build me a squad in for multiplayer games. But i cant play them without another player.

So i found this forum with my problem.

Bad is, that i do not realy understand the FAQ and the Editor.

Can anyone help me a little bit out ?

(sry for my english ! Im German  )

would be nice because i dont want to play with only one character generatet by me . . .

Can you be specific about what you don't understand?

Though making your own characters in the editor is fairly easy as it uses the same character generation screen as starting a new game.

One thing you will have to do is unpack the tiles, and entities from the .bos files using winzip or winrar keeping the folder structure intact. Otherwise you won't be able to see the maps to add your new recruits to.

Otherwise read the tutorial linked above and if you have any specific questions post them.

ok i have extraktet the 3 files via win zip in my diroctonarys.

Now ic have to create my chars, right ?
I start the editor under entity Editor, NEW , just as you said.

    Now the character generation.

When i change my "race type" nothing happens. There alyway stands an male or female human.

And i find it a litte bit difficult to create an character there because on any abilitys etc. are on 0 so i must type them all in myself not like in the generator that you just spend your points and the rest do the editor.

    thats my first "problem"

EDIT : I have found the MAKE button ! sorry !

EDIT²: ok i have generatet per the MAKE funktion a character but in the entity editor it doesnt change anything ? normal ? should i just go on ?

I was going to say the make button will give you starting stats the same as a new game.

To make a character that's a different race i.e. raider-huge either click on Race in the main window and in the pull down box change to the race you require, then if you open the make screen you'll see you've got a raider, or choose your race, the image won't change and set you stats and click done. Then when you go back to the main window the image will change, and if you open the make screen again it should of changed there as well.

Though some races can't be made through the make screen, for these you can either just fill in the sections in the main window or use edit\cheat character stat/skill.

Are you looking at the section modifiers? Make the character as you would with starting a new game. Then once you've finished press done and if you now look at the sections in the main window under Attributes they should of changed.

Ok i have made on so far . . .
but under the main window in the sub-category -Atributes- the Skills and Derived are emty. . .

but i think now i can work with the character generation. i only dont know how to give the character a portrait.

Then ill try to test it to insert it in the game.

(Are there no "savegameeditors" who allow to change the characters portrait, name, age, skills and the rest ?)

There won't be any points in the skills or derived sections until you start levelling the character and add skill points etc.

To give the character a portrait, the display name needs to be the same as the file name of the portrait zar, this will also link up to the description in the characters.txt.

    Not that I know of.

Either download redviewer from the files section and use it to pick a zar.

Or if you've extracted the contents of entities_0.bos correctly, in core\tables there will be several text files, male.txt, female.txt etc these list the order of the portraits as they are displayed in the character generator screen. Use the list to work out the name of the portrait you want.

Or make a new portrait, if you've got a graphics program that'll support png files, make a png 75x100 pixels and then use the png > zar function of FT Tools.

    custom portraits

I too was trying to do the same thing that Schottenschaf was asking about, and I've finally gotten it working (thanks to your help, requiem)! The final touch that I want to apply to my characters is my own custom portraits. I've created a 75 x 100 .png file, which I converted into a .zar file using the FT tools and then named the file to match my character's display name, but the portrait's not appearing in the game and I have no idea how to make it do so  . Any help would be appreciated.

Did you place your zar in core\gui\char?

Also it's case sensitive, so if your filename is tiberius.zar and the display name of the entity is Tiberius it won't link up.

    Yes! It works!

    Hah, it works! That's awesome! :D :D

Thanks a million, requiem. I just didn't know what directory to put the .zar in before .

    Placing own recruits ingame.

I found this tutorial in a thread somewhere in a thread here, and I've been using it to get one of my own, totally random, recruits in the Brahmin Wood mission. I followed everything in the tutorial and can get everything as it should* except for the
bit. I take it that I'm supposed to import the recruit file for my new recruit here but I can't find ANYTHING that vaguely resembles it. Does anyone know if the author of this tutorial forgot to mention something important about this part, or is there something I am overlooking?

Alternatively, are there other bits that the author has forgotten to mention about this matter?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

*for this part: I believe that everything has gone as it should.

That bit is for if you want to add the recruits to the recruit pool. If you just want to add them to the map just place the entity with a player index of 1.

That's it? Wow. Okay I'll try it. (May be that's why the guy never showed up in the start of the game :D ).

Carib FMJ, do you know of a place where I can find alternative character images? Yours looks really good. Thanks.

Just get your own from pics you like. I ended up making my own files for custiom images. You can check the download section for pictures in the Tactics download section, 80% of them I used. You get a hang of it when you uses it enough times.

You wanna make custom profiles, you edit the character text.

Req and Carib taught me these nice tricks. Carib likes a celeberity cast of fighters, I like my own kill squad. Speaking of which, when i get a bigger HD, I am going to re-install Tactics...
