How does something like this happen? All the people I know that hate nuclear power are gonna use this to bludgeon me for supporting nuclear. Very inconvenient!

I remember reading about a family owned scrap yard accepting a load of junk that included a damaged x-ray camera; part of it fell off the truck and ended up near/under their residential porch. It irradiated the family for several days before it was discovered. Most professional scrap yards will scan for radioactivity. They either didn't, or it was off the truck before the load was checked.
