Fallout 2 mod Getting ready for Fallout Sonora translation

Sorry for not updating the thread.. I'm still not in contact with the translation team. My whole family had covid infection during the past month since like 05.09 my mother started to feel pretty bad, medics took her in to a hospital, there was a whole mess around that, i didn't want to spoil the bucket with home sewer on all of You, but since You're asking for it :p.
Sounds bad, but I guess I did ask for it though. May you all get well and all that.
Anyways as it turned out discord no longer works from web browser, had to get that stupid desktop app to get it running.
Sonora's patch 1.10 made a whole lot of stir, since all files need to be re-checked now, progress is going forward but it's going slowly last time I checked. For the most part, it's pretty quiet there, like there was a monthly break or something, it seemes though as the real life is pressing hard on the translation team, just like it does to me. I mean last time i contributed something was like in april, i still have lot of real life duties mostly helping around the house. I cannot really pass on them, So my time to do anything else is seriously limited, any free time i have is making timestamps on my complete playthrough vdeos of Last Hope mod for Quantum Apprentice, so that when he watches them he might actually record a proper playthrough of the mod, for everybody to watch. It is important to do as Last Hope is probably the oldest total conversion mod out there, however it has little to no coverage besides few clips from Quantum.
Good luck in your endeavors then, may they be fruitful. This 'real life' thing is always such a pain deal with whenever it rears its ugly head. What's in the patch, as spoiler free as possible?

thank you.
Just so you know, me and my family are past the covid infection, we're sort of getting back on our feet, so to speak.

I don't quite remember, it came out some time ago, one of the features i remembered was that a certain casino owner now finally gives out quests when town rep get's high enaugh, this wasn't bugged, devs actually implemented new quests for this guy to give, lots of other stuff too, if you want to know more search the forum for the other sonora topics, the 1.10 change list is described in one of them.

Obligatory quarterly Sonora post. If I ever meet some Russian programmers I'll send them your way. Right now the best I can offer is my Ukranian friend who plays way too much Squad.

As You can see by my avatar I'm not Russian either, and still could do a tiny bit of help in the mod's translation.. as of right now, the majority of the translation is taken care of, there are still some files left, but everything is now beeing evaluated by project leader to normalize the quality level of the translation, as not all translators had similar Russian or English levels, and some trnaslators were not fammilliar with Fallout world, so in some cases caps are called covers lids or stimpack is called a stimulator etc. all this needs to be fixed before release, plus finishing of missing lines, and awaiting adaptation to 1.10B from 1.09 which the translation bases on.

It is mostly up to project leader himself now, and he can only act in his own free time ( that is from time to time).. If You're eager to play something fallouty during this christmas time and You haven't tried all the other mods out there, do so now.

Last Hope mod by Forgoten Knight - quite big full total conversion mod, without ending slides fully playable since 1.082.3

Mutant Rising Demo - small one location minigame but still takes few hours to finish

Shattered Destiny by Lexx - small one location mod also takes an hour to two to finish

Ardents Mod demo by Ardent - small mod 3 medium locations and one small some of tem only partially finished, but it's playable.. centered around hth ammo is actually scarse in this game, most enemies run around with pipe rifles and zip guns and carry 2 to 3 bullets, game difficulty is actually quite hard mostly due to ammo beeing limited. You get different game experience based on decisions you make in game, so choose carefully.

I assume You've already tried Nevada and Resurrection, so I won't insist on You trying theese out, but if you haven't the're worth a try too.

Anyways smeone on the discord assumed the translation is going to be ready somewhere next year. So unless Mr.Putin decides fast forward the world to the events from 23.Oct.2077 we might actually enjoy the damn game in english..

New quests, location, possible characters and expansion of existing. There is no approximate release date - "when it will be possible".

Some Patreon campaign for motivation, but yes I know, nobody wants that, too bad for us, eagerly waiting players :). Cheers lads for this work. Much appreciated.

is this project dead since is havent been any updates in the discord since 1 year back ? just wonder ?

The project itself and its translation are done on pure enthusiasm in free time, if possible. No guarantees or deadlines. Not very long ago there was an update of the project + the situation in the world. I don't follow the translation, but I think that discord is no indicator.

Hopefully IF the project dies the work that had been done will be shared with those who might be willing to finish it.

Would be a shame if all that work was wasted. Starting from scratch woudn't look good as most new translators might experience a burn out before reaching the finish line.

...need to look for the people involved and ask them to lay out the developments.

As far as I'm aware, project lead, grawert, is doing everything in his free time from a certain point in the past, that is, the majority of the translation was done, and most folks just left to other projects last time i checked. Now, grawert has to wrap-up everything do fixes proof reading etc. all the work he diecided to do by hmself. I haven't heard from the translation team in a while, although the translation itself required a lot of love from a lore knowing person.. as I've played with the translated flies there were "microkernell" bateries instead of microfusion cells and stimuli packs instead of stimpacks, and other similar skunk eggs made by some of the translators that were not not familliar with the fallout lore. Caps were often misstranslated as covers or lids. All this requires fixing, and grawert realizes that. That's why He devoted himslef, and only by himself, to this work.. on top of that he actively has to work on a full time job, has a familly to attend to (as far as i know) and probably has to dodge the draft so to speak, as the Russian-Ukraine war creates such problems for plain Russianfolk who do not want to take their part in the war as cannon fodder, and who would blame them...

"microkernell & stimuli", like other mistakes, are similar to auto-translation (which often messes up the text) and without viewing the original source.
But so that all the developments are not lost, it is necessary to store them in the cloud and share them with the community. This increases the chances of "surviving".

Yeah You're right..

grawert does keep it online on a server somewhere, and has easy access to it, but he wasn't keen on sharing this stuff until He finishes his work on it, and releases it to public..

However nobody's stoping you from convincng him to think otherwise.. as far as I'm aware the project's discord server is public now, and anyone can just jump right in. Ofcourse you'll require acceptance into the inner translation team by gravert himself, if you want to be a part of the team. Or simply go in, and simply ask for the files. Who knows perhaps with CHA10 and speech 300% you just might convince him :)

If in general the text is comprehendible, small mistakes such as calling stimpaks stimpacks, stimuli make little difference.
I know Quantum Apprentice makes/made corrections to Nevada, even though it was American English which makes spelling easier (Plough/Plow) so kids can get top marks in spelling bee.

I'm only takling about translation that i had access to, there were many files that i had untrnaslated since some files were not present on the discord, but were (probably) inside the translation server, which i had no access to. So all in all i still had to excersize my russian language skills here and there, and some lines were simply missing, since the translation was done for 1.09, and wasn't updated to later revisions. I've played on 1.10b with updated sfall extended, and self adapted npc armor mod.

Around 80% of fan projects/mods/translations that are carried by a single person alone tend to die from what I noticed.

And if the person got a busy job and a family on top of that...

The war certainly does not help either.

I wish him good luck.

1 - garwert
2 - for a certain time, a person does not get in touch - and this is not good
3 - if only he has access to files, then it is very bad, because his prolonged absence will negatively affect the progress of the translation or its loss
4 - and during this period it would be quite possible to translate, and not to start anew...
